    Flying the magenta line?

You haven't contradicted me. My contention is the approach does not have to be activated for scaling to occur. Obviously an approach has to be loaded into the flight plan and I took that as a given. If the approach weren't loaded the system would scale to terminal mode (because that relies on...

    Flying the magenta line?

I don't know of anything in the TSO that says the approach has to be activated for CDI scaling to occur and that's not what Max Trescott teaches who has literally wrote the book on the subject (actually two very good ones). Hopefully he'll take note of this thread and shed some light on the...

    Flying the magenta line?

Unlike you, I'm certainly open to the possibility that I'm wrong, but one thing you would greatly benefit from learning is that just because you don't agree with someone, doesn't mean they are wrong. Because you refuse to support your assertions, I strongly suspect you're the poseur here, but...

    Flying the magenta line?

My understanding is that CDI scaling has nothing to do with whether you activate the approach or not, but rather distances from the airport, FAF, or threshold.

    Flying the magenta line?

I have no idea what sim you're using, but behind an actual G1000 if you activate vectors-to-final all your inbound fixes and legs disappear from the moving map except for the leg from the FAF to the MAP and the missed approach. The HSI works as you described, but depending on where you are and...

    Flying the magenta line?

If you activate VTF, you will not see the final approach course on the map outside of the FAF. For this reason, many people do not ever activate VTF and instead chose an IAF or an IF that lines up on the approach course. The only problem with this method is that there isn't always another fix...

For the camera heads - I bought an S90 and am going out to play

The initial reviews of the S90 are quite promising and I really like the features and specs on it. I'm in the market for a compact camera, but I think I'm going to get the SD990IS instead, simply because it's considerably cheaper and still a quite capable camera. If the price was closer, I'd...

    Flying the magenta line?

There's no requirement to activate the approach and in some cases doing so will get you in trouble if you are not certain where you are going. Once the approach is loaded you can select any fix on the approach, select direct-to, and away you go. Once you get on the approach everything will...

    Flying the magenta line?

I personally don't see why someone would want to fly an approach exclusively by the magenta line. I've actually tried this and it's not as easy as it sounds. If you don't believe it, try it sometime. Completely ignore (or better yet cover up) the DG, CDI, HSI, compass, and all over forms of...

    Flight Lesson:10-07-09

I wouldn't get hung up too much on memorizing the 4,5, 6, 8 or however many C's it's up to now. The main thing you need to know is how to get in contact with either ATC or FSS if you get into a jam. You also need to know how to operate the transponder, because if you do get lost, you'll...

There's one King Air that won't fly again...

The flight was at 17K shortly before or while it started having problems.

There's one King Air that won't fly again...

I'm thinking more along the lines of water in the fuel freezing, although I've never heard of that before in such a plane. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the NTSB.

    Perhaps bad fuel.

There's one King Air that won't fly again...

That kinda looks like fuel oil floating on the lake from the pics. I've also heard the sheriff reported fuel was everywhere at the crash site.

My kitty cat is in chronic renal failure

I had a dog that had the same problem and lasted for several years that way. She just drank and peed a lot. Finally her kidneys gave out completely and she died peacefully in her sleep. She was 17 years old so I'm sure if that didn't get her, something else would have.

    Help me understand CHT requirements

The JPI does a lot more than just measure CHT. § 91.205 (b) Visual-flight rules (day). For VFR flight during the day, the following instruments and equipment are required: ... (7) Oil temperature gauge for each air-cooled engine.

    North Star Over My Shoulder

Both are good, but I liked Weather Flying better. Another one I think it better is Fate is the Hunter, by Ernest K. Gann is similar to North Star over my Shoulder (both are classic tales of the flying careers of their respective authors). Buck is great on the technical stuff, but Gann tells a...
