    No more "or GPS

What happened to all the "or GPS" approaches? In the not so distant past, these seemed to be prevalent. For example, KTEB VOR 24 no longer has "or GPS" in the title. And many others in the US also seem to have lost this in their title. Our aircraft Flight Manual specifically says we can fly...

Adjustments to DA for altimeter correction

Let say your altimeter reads 45 feet high when on the ground. The altimeter source elevation is the same as your aircraft (so not a temp correction situation). For an ISA day, would you make an adjustment to your Decision Altitude based on this knowledge? Any recommendations from relevant...

    ADS-B Practicalities

Lots of ADS-B info out there, but I'm struggling with the practicalities. Consider it is the year 2021, and all IFR aircraft now have ADS-B out installed, so traffic is as heavy as today, or more so. First, how will this expedite a high level flight between busy airports, say from Miami to...

    Climb via Question

A number of months ago I was departing 24 Teterboro KTEB assigned to CLIMB VIA the RUDDY SIX DEPARTURE. The route description basically says climb 240 deg to 520 feet MSL, then direct DAVIM, then direct WENTZ to cross WENTZ at 1500 feet, then direct RUUDY, then heading 280 deg, with a "Maintain...

    Obstacle clearance on Departure Procedures

Re AIM para 5-2-8, Instrument Departure Procedures I read it a few times. I have a simple question for the case when there is a SID gradient required for obstacle clearance that is above 200 feet per nm (fpnm). Will there be a 48 fpnm obstacle clearance or is it perhaps greater? For example...

LP approach without other minimums lines on the chart

Hoping the wisdom of the group can help me here. I'm looking for an LP approach to a runway where there is NOT an LNAV, LNAV/VNAV, nor an LPV approach. That is, the approach chart does NOT have a line for LNAV, LNAV/VNAV, nor LPV minimums, but does for LP. And....as an aside....just a thought...

KSBS runway portion not useable for landing....

KSBS Steamboat Springs in Colorada, has 14/32 with 4452 feet. Runway 32 has a displaced threshold of about 600 feet. Runway 14 has no displaced threshhold. The AF/D here http://aeronav.faa.gov/afd/02MAR2017/sw_278_02MAR2017.pdf says LDA of 3852 feet for either 14 or 32. Why landing rwy 14...

    Terrain clearance on ODPs

Lets say a runways's Obstacle departure procedure lists a climb of 500 feet per nm to 9500 feet (example, runway 6 at Gunnison CO, KGUC), field elevation about 7700 feet. If I was to pass the departure end of the runway at 35 feelt agl, and climb at the stated gradient, what obstacle clearance...

Alternate Weather minimums very close to approach minimums

I always thought that alternate weather minimums were meant to provide a reasonable buffer between the forecast ceiling and visibility, and the minimums for the approach that may be flown. However, I see for KPQI Presquile, Maine, that this is far from the case Eg, Cat c aircraft with vor (no...

    MU reading and aircraft deceleration

My buddy was in Twin Falls Idaho KTWF a month or so ago. He was given a friction value of .4 for the runway I think he said, maybe .3. Not being familiar with what that meant, I looked in the AIM where 4−3−9. Runway Friction Reports and Advisories, para c states "MU (friction) values range...

Simple Blackberry app for VFR flights

Wondering if the group can help me search for an app, I spent some time googling but came up short. I'd really like to find an app for a blackberry that shows my location on a vfr map of some sort. My lady would like to see whats ahead of her on her blackberry, and then identify that item on...

    "Climb via" question

I have been reading the US AIM (Apr 3 2014) on “climb via” SIDs, this starts at para 5-2-8 e 5, page 5-2-9 . There is one paragraph I am having trouble understanding how it is applied, it is para 5 (b) which states: 5……clearance to “climb via” authorizes the pilot to: para (b)...

Using FMS for departures with a localizer

Can anyone fill me in on whether a certified FMS (lets say non waas capable) is able to fly a departure that involves a localizer? For example, the SARDD 3 departure from Aspen, KASE. The chart shows a heading to intercept a back course. Does an FMS fly this using (mostly) GPS inputs? Or...

KDPA Du Page night approach procedures

I might be going to Du Page, KDPA. Anyone from the group have some insight on the following 2 questions? 1. For the Rnav 20L, there is a note "Procedure NA at night". Would this be because of obstacles close in below mda, and no visual glide slope indicator for runway 20L? 2. Why is night...

    Flying through an ADIZ

If a pilot enters an ADIZ without contacting atc, will that be a problem? For example, a pilot files a flight plan IFR from MYBS Bimini, Bahamas, to Fort Lauderdale. Customs notification and Eapis are complete. Departs vfr on time, flies the filed route, for example BR57V.... at 4500 feet...

    MEA's on STAR's

I've been meaning to ask this for awhile. Why do some STARs have such high MEA's. For example, the Kingston 1 arrival into JFK has FL190 under the track line between two waypoints. It's not a planning altitude is it? Stan

    Glideslope Required...

I'm looking at the LDA dme rwy 28R San Franciso, Calif, KSFO. There are no minimums line for an LDA only, just for "LDA/GS". "Procedure not authorized when glideslope is not available". Can anyone provide a reason why this approach was not "TERPed" for a non precision approach, ie using loc...
