Helicopter training SE PA (no Robbies)

Any recommendations for helicopter flight training within 250 miles of Reading, PA (KRDG?) I need a few hours to get proficient and take the check-ride again (caught in the Mark George DPE debacle) I want to train in something other than a R22 or R44. I don’t have any Robbie time to meet the...

Minimum IFR climb rate - C182

So as my girls continue to grow, more frequently we are IFR in our fully loaded normally aspirated C182Q climbing to get above the cloud tops for a better ride. My standard procedure on takeoff (once reaching pattern altitude) is to go to a cruise climb at 25/24 doing 95-100 knots. This keeps...

    Mag and vacuum pump failure

So this morning after takeoff I experienced a vacuum pump and left mag failure. It's a O-470U in a C182. My A&P can't trouble shoot until late next week. Since they are both driven by the same accessory drive, I'm assuming the internal engine gear failed. Has anyone had this happen or can you...

    Instructor night currency

A requirement for the commercial rating is a two hour dual night xcountry. If the student is a private pilot with night currency and will be the PIC for the entire flight, does the instructor need to be night current to provide the instruction for this flight. I can’t locate a definitive answer...

    People say the dumbest stuff

Just wow! Yesterday I was departing Reading, PA and this guy tells the tower he is in violation of the FARs. In actuality broken cloud bases were more like 2300- 2500 so no violation but I found this amusing. 19:00 to 20:00 http://archive-server.liveatc.net/krdg/KRDG2-Gnd-Twr-Dec-01-2018-1430Z.mp3

Cell phone use in the air

What is the legality of phone use while flying? I don't do it, but find it is harder and harder to keep passengers..... mainly my wife  (our kids don't have phone yet)... from texting and answering call while in the air. Based on a quick search it appears to be illegal but I'm not seeing...

    WX-10 stormscope

I just upgrade to a nice 182Q. I'm in the process of working to fix what's broke. It has a WX-10 stormscope that displays "FLAG" when power up. I found the user manual online, but it doesn't address this. I'm assuming it means it's broke, but I don't know. Any advise on what I should do next...

I have nice clean, uncut 172M that has been in my family for 30 years. Low time 180 horse power factory new engine. Nice modern paint. Beautiful leather interior. Never a trainer. It needs a panel upgrade. I was planning on doing a Garmin stack but my problem is that my family is growing and...

    Bumps and Kids

Last Friday a front was pushing threw. Winds were 18 Gusting to 30. The forecast was for a beautiful weekend and it was has been a few months since we flew to our cabin. Does anyone file /A anymore?

I fly with a Anywhere Map GPS but always file /A because that is how my plane is equiped. Controllers are always clearing me direct to my destination of fixes along my route that I can't navigate to without use of the GPS. I usually respond "unable I'm /A" I get the feeling GPS is so common that...

How did I survive without on board weather?

I did three "light" IMC flights this weekend and I feel so much safer flying with nexrad weather on the handheld gps. It is really nice to get a picture of the weather that the controller is vectoring you around. It has been the most useful upgrade to my steam gauge slant alpha cockpit. I'm not...
