    Walmart drones are here.

The thing about technology is that it never quite works the way you want it to. Also the never-ending software and hardware issues create a continuous significant effort to manage. Add to this security, vandalism, on-going personnel training, hardware maintenance, and hardware failures, and I...

    Straight ahead....

A recent fatal accident is the motivation behind this post. The idea of landing straight ahead upon a loss of thrust on take-off is a concept that has been a training standard for many years. Unfortunately AOPA, and a few others, have recently suggested that an impossible turn is not impossible...

What's the deal with CFII's that don't want to fly IMC?

My cfi didn't want to fly in IMC because the plane didn't have dual alternators or a map-based, reliable GPS. Also it was my plane and I don't think he trusted it. Probably didn't help that on our very first flight into imc (light cloud coverage, no real weather issues) our vacuum pump failed...

Can one completely dead spark plug cause hard starting on an O -235-C1?

Trouble shooting a new hard starting problem on my 4 cylinder O-235-C1. Electrical, battery, starter all seem good. Found one completely dead spark plug on the bottom #4 cylinder. It did not register at all on the ohm meter. All other plugs were within specs. (Tempest UREM37BY) Can this...

Really bad crud on spark plug

Short taxi, small airport, my hangar is right at mid field. I lean until rpm drop. I live in a high DA area so leaning is ingrained in every phase of every flight.

Really bad crud on spark plug

From my O-235-C1 engine. #2, bottom plug. These were cleaned 11 months ago and about 50 hours. The engine had been unusually hard to start the last two times so I decided to pull the plugs a month before the condition inspection. For 10 of the last months I was running 100LL. The last month...

    Baffle seal rivet shavings

You're on the right track. Vacuum as much as you can. Check for debris between the fins. You may need to get creative if you find some heads or shavings in there. Safety wire may help fish it out. You should make an effort to get all if it out.

Man who crashed snowmobile into a parked Black Hawk helicopter suing government for $9.5M

The guy has a point if the statement that the aircraft was parked on a designated snowmobile trail, unlighted, and camouflaged, at night, is true. There is an obligation on the pilot to ensure a safe landing/parking place and this can be considered negligent, even if they got approval...

    182L POH Stall Speeds

"go out an try it" as George pointed out is the only correct answer. If you are uncomfortable doing this by yourself, get a CFI to go with you. There should be no uncertainty when it comes to these speeds as they may save your life some day. Then go out and spend an entire flight doing slow...

    Another AOPA failure, IMO

I don' think the price is that high in today's world. At all. As an engineer If I had to go out to a jobsite that wasn't in our contract, the typically fee would have been $1500 to $2000. That was 8 years ago. I guess, depending on where you live, $900 to $1500 for a private pilot checkride...

If you have a stabilator, this is worth the watch.

If you watch this on youtube, speed the playback up to 1.25. That works really well.

Rob - Email me at gaw.ebm at gmail dot com and I will forward my (very long) condition inspection checklist for my 601XLB. I have updated it every year to continually improve it. My condition inspection checklist is now 42 pages long! My engine is an O-235 so if your engine is different some...

    Zenith Zodiac 601 HD

This issue never involved the 601 HD aircraft. It was limited to the 601 XL (my plane). The HD has a different wing. Also, the XL problem was fixed a long time ago and almost all of these aircraft have been upgraded to the XLB. Of course if someone is looking at buy a flying 601XL you can...

    Hangar as an investment?

I recently looked into a deal at my airport with a 4 hangar building. Even if I got a good price on the property and jacked the hangar rent up 100% over current, there was no way this was going to have any kind of reasonable payback. I don't expect the property to increase in value significantly...

Dealing with a crisis(?) of confidence

Your post flight analysis and concerns are a sign of a good pilot in the making. Serioulsy. It shows you are understanding that this is a serious pastime and deserves you continuing quest for improvement and learning. The people that scare me are those who, after their 4th solo flight, post a...
