    Tailbeacon without pitot static check

Pretty sure transponder is required to be on all the time if you have one installed. It's not an option to "choose" to leave it off.

    100% T&P va rating and a 1st class medical

No idea what your life is really like or whether you are fit for your goal. I thought I had more physical problems than just about anyone. Apparently I am at least number 2! I fly myself and my wife, but only when I'm feeling safe. There are many days when I am not good enough to fly. There is...

Two dead after Mooney door pops open. St Augustine FL

In some ways, the problems with airplanes is that they are too reliable. Emergencies are a theoretical situation that many never experience for real. I flew for 30 years and never had an "emergency" (semi) until recently. I did not handle it as well as I should have. Nor sure how it would...

    Lycoming Engine replacement

Wow! If my O-235 grenades itself I guess I'll be converting to a $12,000 modern engine with fuel injection and 4 gallon per hour fuel burn, more horsepower and significant increase in airspeed. And much lower mx and operating costs. (Viking). It makes you wonder about the economics of an...

Am I too big to be a CFI?

Yes. For some students you will be too large. To be fair, you can do whatever you'd like. If this is truly your passion, go for it. However, I would not want to take lessons from you in a 150/52, or even a 172. These planes are cramped enough for two people, much less a larger person like...

FAA Revokes Santa Monica Propeller Service

Wow! If I'd had a constant speed prop overhauled there I would be having it rechecked - and going after this company for the costs.

    Low Temps on One Cylinder

You're right. I have the identical engine out of the same aircraft in my experimental. Lycoming recommends checking valve lash every 100 hours. Every condition inspection for 7 years I have checked this. None have ever needed adjustment. Certainly worth checking though.

Route suggestions for CA to NC helicopter XC

I flew a similar trip in my light sport plane two years ago. It is only marginally faster than the R22 and the legs are not that different. I found a number of challenges. 1. Food - this was a never-ending problem. Most GA airports are 3 to 5 miles from the nearest town. Trying to find...

    Bipolar plane owner

My 30 year flying experience has been that the Mx headaches never end. New plane, old plane, newly-rebuilt old plane, it makes no difference. Then, when everything is running good, the weather screws up your plans. If you have to wait for someone else to fix your plane or do the annual, the...

Filing and flying IFR without Instrument Rating

Before you go calling someone a loser you may need to take some remedial training in reading comprehension. The guy you are calling a loser DID recommend turning him in, if he didn't respond to peer pressure. i think you owe someone an apology because you are dead wrong about what the guy...

    Walmart drones are here.

The thing about technology is that it never quite works the way you want it to. Also the never-ending software and hardware issues create a continuous significant effort to manage. Add to this security, vandalism, on-going personnel training, hardware maintenance, and hardware failures, and I...

    Straight ahead....

A recent fatal accident is the motivation behind this post. The idea of landing straight ahead upon a loss of thrust on take-off is a concept that has been a training standard for many years. Unfortunately AOPA, and a few others, have recently suggested that an impossible turn is not impossible...

What's the deal with CFII's that don't want to fly IMC?

My cfi didn't want to fly in IMC because the plane didn't have dual alternators or a map-based, reliable GPS. Also it was my plane and I don't think he trusted it. Probably didn't help that on our very first flight into imc (light cloud coverage, no real weather issues) our vacuum pump failed...

Can one completely dead spark plug cause hard starting on an O -235-C1?

Trouble shooting a new hard starting problem on my 4 cylinder O-235-C1. Electrical, battery, starter all seem good. Found one completely dead spark plug on the bottom #4 cylinder. It did not register at all on the ohm meter. All other plugs were within specs. (Tempest UREM37BY) Can this...

Really bad crud on spark plug

Short taxi, small airport, my hangar is right at mid field. I lean until rpm drop. I live in a high DA area so leaning is ingrained in every phase of every flight.

Brand new Bendix mags two years ago. About 125 hours on them.

Really bad crud on spark plug

Yes, plugs were cleaned 11 months ago at the last condition inspection. Only flown 50 hours since then.

Really bad crud on spark plug

No, still round. Plugs have about 300 hours on them.
