    Bad aviation journalism thread

A number of years ago a Comanche made a forced landing on a Burbank street. There was no fire, and the occupants all walked away. A fireman, with TV microphone thrust in front of his face, said, “Those passengers were very lucky there was no fuel in the tanks …. “

End of the Rope: My Flight to Hollywood

I learned to fly at Fullerton in the mid 1960s. -X2-1/2HK was routine. Occasionally FUL tower would call three-mile visibility, but maybe it was a "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" kind of thing because they wanted some action too. In the hazy afternoons, back before the localizer, the final approach...

    Randy Sparks (1933-2024)

This one hurts. Not only was Randy Sparks, who died Sunday at the age of 90, an innovative and creative genius in the music business, he was a close friend. Randy was a prolific songwriter and up-and-coming folksinger in the late 1950s and early 1960s, performing in clubs and venues up and...

A little different view for Arizona -- a cloudy morning for a local sightseeing flight west of Phoenix. You might have seen the national TV ads recently for United Airlines' "Aviate" academy. It's based at my home field GYR (Goodyear AZ), having taken over the facilities and Cirrus SR20...

    "November"

While flying my Citabria I've had controllers address me as "Helicopter xxxxx." Now I know a Citabria is slow, but ... Actually the issue is that the Citabria's type designator is 'CH7A', which at first glance looks like it might belong to a large helicopter.

    "November"

I've heard a lot of pilots of experimentals who think that "Experimental" should be used on the radio instead of the aircraft type. Not so; FAR 91.319(d)(3) only says the pilot "must notify the control tower of the experimental nature of the aircraft." Funny story about that ... AerSale has...
