Buying a cheap plane for training

My opinion is the C-150/152 are poor instrument trainers. They are my favorite airplanes and IFR is my favorite form of flying. The 150/152 bob around like a cork in the ocean compared to the 172. When panels were all steam gauge, it barely had the minimum space for instruments. Maybe that's...

Cessna 150 or 152, which would you rather have?

Nosewheel shimmy is common in the 152, IIRC. Lots of student landings eventually enlarges the bolt holes that connect the dampener to the nosewheel. Ours needed to be leaned aggressively for ground ops. I loved that little plane. It may be my favorite.

Emergency exit question - especially for Cherokee pilots

Kick out the plastic windows used for the windshield or side windows. They are thin plastic.

How to boost your currency/proficiency practice?

I have recently learned about AQP for General Aviation https://www.dangryder.com/aqp/ Instead of practicing maneuvers listed in the ACS practice maneuvers/scenarios that account for aircraft accidents. It's how the airlines train, as I understand it.

    Boat or Airplane

Boat doesn't have the cost of annual inspection does it? If the boat is on a trailer, I'm from The South we have bass boats, it seems the cost to store and maintain it will be much less than an aircraft. But some owners won't tolerate their vehicle looking less than brand new/magazine quality so...

    Read the NOTAMS

Yes, the AWOS is broadcasting the airport closure and weather conditions.

    Read the NOTAMS

Agreed, but if a pilot googles FAA NOTAM database and the airport identifier it's easy to find them. I don't know why weather and NOTAMS are full of abbreviations.

    Read the NOTAMS

At my airport they have construction going on for almost 2 months. The original NOTAM indicated the airport closure would be for 30 days. Every week and a couple of times each weekend we still get aircraft making it into the pattern and announcing their position before they hear from Unicom the...

    Callout Fee

Our airport is closed for runway maintenance, it's NOTAMed, and it has big Xs with flashing lights on the ends of the runway. Once a week we still get pilots announcing they are entering the downwind for runway X. These are not pilots conducting instrument approaches. These are pilots that make...

    View Limiting Device

Don't the Brits cover all of the windows leaving only a small slot for the pilot to look out?

Someone should invent a small hood that attaches to your headset and lowers to block your vision.

    Unapproved item; must be checked

I think TSA's "Red Team" routinely gets 80-85% of the devices that simulate real firearms and bombs past TSA screeners at almost every US air-carrier airport. I'm not surprised by ANYTHING at an airport any longer.

Thinking of getting a new work coat

I was in trucking for a long time where Carhart and knockoffs are widely used. I always heard the complaint against Carhart was "they were good until recently when the yuppies started buying them to look like they do something besides type all day."

    Winter Flight School Recommendations

Florida Aviation Academy in Pompano FL (Ft Lauderdale area). They have housing available, Frasca sim, about 5 aircraft. They are a part 141 school so they are organized and can sometimes meet lower hour requirements for some ratings. https://flaviationacademy.com/

Which twins give you a bath if you re-fuel tanks out of order?

I was a line service tech at a couple of FBOs back in college decades ago. I'm semi-retired and am now working at another FBO after 30 years. I vaguely remember a couple of aircraft models that if you tried to re-fuel their tanks in the wrong order you would have fuel pouring out of a filler...
