    Chicago Flyway Questions

When in doubt , ask. We have TFRs nearly every Saturday in the fall for Stanford football games where I fly (KPAO) and the airport is inside the TFR. We are nearly always talking to NorCal anyways so it really never affects anything. If you ask (something like “NorCal, Cessna 12345, any special...

Club in Chicago area for an orientation flight?

I will be on the north side of the city by the lake, and honestly GYY vs PWK vs DPA look like six of one, half a dozen of another. It's gonna be about an hour any direction... Leaning towards Bob at IAA/DPA because of all of these positive stories.

Club in Chicago area for an orientation flight?

Man, I really wish I could. Having grown up in the twilight days of Meigs' existence and then becoming a pilot later, it would have been so cool to be able to fly from there. But hey, at least they turned it into a nice park.

Club in Chicago area for an orientation flight?

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I'll be in the city itself so theoretically the closer the better - obviously there're none particularly close because of the looming ORD B. Probably PWK, 06C, and DPA make the most sense but I'm willing to drive a bit.

    Excited for discovery flight tomorrow

Most important thing on a discovery flight: have fun. Second most important thing: Figure out if the instructor you're flying with will be a good personality match for you. Oh, and do eat breakfast before you go up. But don't eat a whole cow.

    Non tower airport

Many others have said this already. But just land on the runway you want. Also do your best to communicate with any traffic on other runways and 100% make sure you're not interfering with others.

Club in Chicago area for an orientation flight?

I am a newly minted private pilot, did all of my training and flying (so far) in NorCal. I'll be spending a month back home in Chicago. Does anyone know a club with which I could go up for an orientation flight with a CFI and then theoretically rent/solo? Thanks!

Could someone explain the typical procedure for the XC portion of the PPL Checkride?

With the DPE we just said "request flight following for maneuvers in the area". Then we went to the first fix on the navlog, filled in the boxes for that leg, and he came up with a diversion scenario.

    Propeller windmilling, the truth

In addition to all of this about engine drag (which is true and relevant), the interaction of the windmilling prop with the air also creates more turbulent air than if it were to be stopped. That turbulent air interacts with the rest of the airplane differently as well.

New rental location- no fuel sticks!

Fuel systems in the 172 have changed a lot generation to generation. The legacy Cessnas mostly have the 40gal integral tanks, while the restart ones mostly (all?) have the 53gal wet wings. There're also some other ones (oddballs like 172RG or Hawk XP, as well as extended range tanks, etc)...

    Extremely minor aviation pet peeves...

Flair/Flare When somebody says they're turning to a "left final" Ending a CTAF call with "xyz traffic"

    IATA Identifiers.

USA also has many older airports - older airports probably chose the identifiers first.
