Trip to Alaska in a Vans RV-9A

I was surprised to see how few views these videos have. I wouldn’t have the guts to do that type of flying, but it was sure fun to watch. I’ve read many of Vlad’s posts over on the Vans forum. He really gets around in that little plane!

Trip to Alaska in a Vans RV-9A

Not my trip (unfortunately), but a very scenic and interesting trip by this YouTube poster. Lots of very low flying in valleys. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNkYIYsggMqSmGQFZe8dyviND5CzAJgnx My sincere apologies if this has already been discussed.

Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

Just an update that the mystery is now solved. We explored carb issues, spark plug issues, and potential mag issues, but then had a different A&P take a look at it. Turns out the intake manifold gasket on cylinder 4 was partly missing. New gasket, and now it runs perfectly. We were one day away...

Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

Now that makes a lot more sense! Thank you! The muffler-tailpipe had a hairline crack, not visible to the eye. It took a smoke test to find it, then a TIG weld repaired it. Maybe it cracked when the mechanic took off the shroud during the annual to check for cracks (irony)? The scat tube...

Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

Thank you. We ordered two new plugs to cycle through the engine. It definitely happened as a result of the annual. It’s hard for me to believe that both mags went bad. Interestingly, we did find a muffler leak -the hard way. While running up the engine on the ramp working on the rough engine...

Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

That’s true, but we are very active participants in the maintenance of our plane. I would never blindly trust any mechanic’s opinion. If what he said didn’t make sense to me, I might even post on this forum. If by doing that, I discover a nugget of wisdom he (we) didn’t consider, then that’s a...

Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

He did investigate, and wants us to get the magnetos checked - to the tune of about $800. I’m simply looking for some other opinions here. It runs rough at low rpm, but much smoother at a higher rpm, as stated in the original post.

Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

I was there for almost the entire annual, and he didn’t mess with prop. At least while I was there. Interesting idea about the engine mounts though. I will take a better look at that. Thanks!

Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

This started right after our last annual. Above 1400RPM, everything seems smooth. It acts the same on either mag. The RPM drop is also about the same on either mag at 1500RPM and 2000RPM if only running on one. No issues before the annual. The mechanic thinks the mags are bad (both of them)...

Coolest thing you saw at Oshkosh 2017

I agree about the RC planes! I was ready to leave, but decided to stick around just in case it was mildly interesting. I've never seem a flight demonstration like that!

I love what he said at the end; "Every pilot should fly a Spitfire at least once." I wish. Thanks for sharing!

    Leaky struts on Cherokee Warrior

During the annual on October 2015, I saw the A&P add fluid. I don't know if he did it using an approved procedure. So since it's always hangared, and I've never seen any leaks, I presume the fluid is still in the strut. But that's a good question. I've read a bunch of stuff on the internet...

    Leaky struts on Cherokee Warrior

This has been an issue for years, and it seems that cold weather exasperates the problem. I never find any hydraulic fluid leaking, so my thinking is it must be leaking air (nitrogen) from the schrader valves, and not from the O ring. Or am I wrong, and I really need to buy the strut rebuild...

Instrument Written - Reverse Calculate CAS from TAS

I think they randomly pick questions for each subject, but ensure that each category is covered by a requisite number of questions. That's why I asked the OP if he was referring to the actual test, or practice tests. I'm curious if other recent test takers had the same experience I had regarding...

Instrument Written - Reverse Calculate CAS from TAS

I guess I wasn't clear. There were no questions on the test which required anything more than a calculator. Even though I studiously re-learned how to use the silly thing.

I took it in May (95%), and I never used my E6B once. Are you talking about the practice tests?

New Garmin portable GPS Aera 660 announced

I "almost" purchased one during Oshkosh as well. I already have a GDL39-3D, which works well with Garmin Pilot, Foreflight (finally), and my old Aera 510. But the 510 isn't very bright, doesn't have charts, and my subscription recently expired. Rather than spend another $150 to update it, the...
