4/15/2024 - Rancho Palos Verdes, California "Dog and pilot crash in Pacific Ocean"

Glad they are OK! And I want to know what kind of dog it was. Labs like water enough that they might do something like that on purpose.

Any experience in Higher power hangar door

Am I the only one the read the title, and thought "So Jesus is opening their hanger door?" If so, I would expect it to work pretty well, but it might attract attention. And questions. "So, rather than bring him over to meet the family and friends, you asked him to stay here and work the door...

The amazing cryogenic JPI EDM 930

All the above makes sense. The observation I have is that the commonality between all those different temperature systems may be that they're maybe supposed to be isolated from the aircraft. Guessing on the setup, but the thermocouples operate at low voltages, so they may be run "floated" a...

    DC-4 Down in Fairbanks

That's horrible. I thought the word "explosion" might be an exaggeration, but that looks like an explosion to me. Fuel leak that resulted in an explosive air/fuel mix between the engine and cowling?

    PA-12

Never have flown either. Have flown a few J-3s. I don't know what the CG range is on a PA-12, but my suggestion is to make sure you know what it is and don't let it go too far aft. The J-3 is a wonderful airplane, but doesn't fly nice tail heavy.

    Bad aviation journalism thread

:) Same thing, in the days of parallel printer ports. I wouldn't say "many people don't know to tell if a printer cable is plugged in". Instead, I'd say "sometimes you have to unplug and reconnect the cable to make it work". That fixed fully 50% of printer calls. Funniest call I ever had was...

    Lets make Friday 'Joke Day'!

Isn't that the same as the old Dr Who villain, except with different feet and without the plungers?

Alec Baldwin shoots and kills cinematographer.

I know that's the consensus, and it doesn't surprise me that there are standards, but I don't know of any study or evidence to indicate that there's a problem. On the other hand, they're also sometimes pointing loaded firearms at people that they don't haven't identified, so maybe there's some...

Alec Baldwin shoots and kills cinematographer.

Yep, I'm familiar with free pistol, and not a fan. For some it works. That's a single shot event. The theory is that you don't disturb sight alignment, but I believe that any movement of the hand is going to affect alignment. With conventional pistol, in slow fire, you actually are using the...

Alec Baldwin shoots and kills cinematographer.

I don't know that there's an appropriate trigger pull for the application of "killing your employee". That might sound like a smart a** response, but I am a bit familiar with trigger pull of competitive pistol shooting. For conventional pistol, the general concept is roughly that the trigger...

    Bad aviation journalism thread

Wouldn't it be easier to have a list of aviation stories done by mainstream media where they get it right? I mean, along the lines of every once in a while a blind squirrel finds a nut kind of thing.

Wasn't Palindrome the guy with the business card that said "have gun will travel"? Or do I have him mixed up with someone that was in the artillery?

    New paint scheme - opinions

I like them both. I probably wouldn't notice if I saw one and the other were switched out for it. That said, I like the Skylane logo, and I like the drop shadow numbers. Also agree about not putting the decals over the latches. If for no other reason than it's a little distracting.

    Preview of things to come.....

My bet is that it's a poor attempt at boosting retention/recruitment of the drone pilots. But I think they're going after the wrong demographic. Setup the drone pilots to be based in Florida, and recruit retired pilots who have to pee too often to want to fly actual fly 3 hour flights. The...

Tennessee Senate passes bill outlawing Chemtrails

Not that I'm a fan, but I roughly remember a Gore Vidal quote along the lines of "the most dangerous people in the world are intelligent people. Not because they're any more malicious, but because they're capable of justifying anything." I would add to that, that especially in the scientific...

Wire vs synthetic rope; hangar doors

Do you mean at the attachment end, and does it have a thimble? Or at a pulley? A wire rope setup should last a really long time, like forever for a garage door. Sometimes the pulleys are too small and that causes the cable to wear prematurely. For 1/4" cable I believe you want more than 5 or...

Tennessee Senate passes bill outlawing Chemtrails

It might be outside their jurisdiction, but perhaps as a next step, they ban any instance of pushing really hot objects off the edge of the earth, in an attempt to lower the overall temperature. You know, run a heat pump, make a bunch of stuff really hot, and push it off the edge.

Alec Baldwin shoots and kills cinematographer.

This seems simple to me. If you have what you know is an actual firearm in your hand and you kill someone with it, it's your fault. If you can't figure out how to verify that won't happen, then don't do that. Very simple. He pointed a gun a someone, pulled the trigger, and killed them. To...

What kept you going through training?

Did you hate your solos, or were you terrified during your solos? Asking because those are two different things to me. If you're terrified, it sounds like you weren't ready yet, but congratulations, you survived. I'm also wondering why you're thinking about cross country if you're not...
