I really appreciate the write up. I'd like to do the same thing, although IMC isn't much of a thing here in the desert southwest. Spending 5-figures on avionics and then doing the training isn't very appealing, neither is renting when you own a plane.
Wow that's actually pretty cool. I can't see myself buying one but maybe it will further drive down the price of the STC-PMA autopilots and maybe force them to release cheaper single-axis versions.
My plane is tied down less than 100’ from where this 150 came to rest. The elevator hit the pavement, something hit the right aileron and bent the pushrod and the door blew open and broke the stop. Definitely lucky that this didn’t happen though.
How about replacing an ADF with a DME for a low budget IFR trainer upgrade. You already have wiring to the audio panel, power and ground for the ADF (maybe not enough power). No external indicator needed. You would need an antenna on the belly.
