    Finding Downwind Struggle/Sweat

Not sure what you mean by "correct downwind". There is only one downwind (ok two, if you count left and right downwind). If ATC asks you to join a left downwind, and you join a right downwind, that would be a problem. If ATC asks you to join a left downwind, and you do a straight-in final, that...

Is it legal to accept payment for training if you don't sign a log book?

On that topic, I've come across many DPE's who will only accept cash. I wonder why. I don't know many people who walk around with $800 of cash in their wallet.

    Cool Photoshopped Photo

That's what happens if the pilot tries to take off with the jet intake covers in place.

    Battery or Both

It doesn't make a big difference, so it is a matter of personal preference. I use battery only, and then turn the field on. This allows me to verify the charge/discharge indicator and the warning light after starting.

    New hydrogen engine

The same thing was said, I am sure, about horseless carriages. Hay, grain and water can be found at every choach stops, but where are they going to find this newfangled gasoline?

How to set up to land with a dead engine.

Orbiting over downwind until you get down to about 2000 ft AGL is fine, but orbiting at the approach end until you are short final is too risky in my opinion. This is what the original post was asking.

How to set up to land with a dead engine.

I would suggest making it as close to a normal traffic pattern as possible, but not use any flaps or landing gear until you are on short final. Using uncommon maneuvers like spirals don't make much sense to me. Even if you practice these things, nobody lands this way on a regular basis. The...

I was Robbed, Robbed, I tell you...

I had tailwinds both ways on a 300 NM trip. I thought I'd rub that in :-)

    Electronic Logbook?

I use an excel spreadsheet. Everything I found online was not to my taste. I can format and print it using standard logbook format on paper as a backup in case google and my home evaporate in a nuclear explosion. I use a physical logbook to attach endorsement stickers.

FAA FOIA request pilot enforcement records

You reported your concern, which is the right thing to do. The FAA investigated and did something. So the matter is closed as far as you are concerned. I don't see why you need to know the outcome, unless you are going to be directly impacted by this outcome, or you were a victim of a crime and...

    PA28 down near Gainesville, FL

Many professional pilots, CFIs and students are alive today because of strict rules enforced by their employers and flight schools, not necessarily because the pilots made safe judgement calls. When these pilots transition to part 91 in their own airplanes with fewer rules, that is when their...

    PA28 down near Gainesville, FL

The pilot was not instrument rated. A competent instrument rated pilot could have flown it without crashing if the instruments on the photo were even partially functional. In an emergency, you can get yourself to safety without any charts. ATC is there to help, but the pilot needs to know what...

Do you call when you're the unknown traffic

What is the purpose of monitoring Approach (instead of talking to them)? They may point you out to other traffic, but you have to do the inverse calculation in your head to figure out where the other traffic is.

    Carb ice, or more?

Carb ice can occur at criuse power, so I would not rule that out. But there are other possibilities. If you excessively lean the mixture to the point of roughness and then engage the carb heat, it will have a tendency to run better. As Pinecone stated, density altitude goes up, which may match...

Educate me on the aviation medical debate

Not just mental health, but regular health as well. I know people who prefer not to do voluntary and optional tests because if they flag an issue, it will become reportable. The belief is that it is better to keep flying until you die rather than stop flying due to a medical issue and then you...

    IFR refresher study material c.2023?

One of the discussion points that come up in many FAA safety seminars is the declining systems knowledge by pilots. That includes an overall understanding of powerplants and avionics. FAA's instrument procedures handbook, instrument flying handbook, weather handbook are good places to start, but...

    Lost proficiency - Gained weight

Coffee in the morning with a protein bar, no lunch, then meat and vegetables for dinner. Avoid rice, bread, grains, pastas, potatoes. I used to have a bottle of tums at home, the office and in the car. Now I have not had acid indigesion in over 5 years. Even simple things like allergies, colds...

    Lost proficiency - Gained weight

I can tell you that the fear of not being able to maintain my FAA medical has been the main driving force for why I took my health seriously over the last two decades. Some might say that is not a healthy attitude, but in my case I can't deny the true fact. Weight, blood pressure, cholestrol etc...

Is this spam or legit? (re: IFR magazine)

I was suspicious at first, but I think it is legitimate. The link takes you to flyingmedia.dragonforms.com. I declined to use that site, so I went directly to ifr-magazine.com and initiated a password change. It sent me an email. Clicking on that email took me to the same...
