    Un-documented maintenance

This didn't turn out well for this Convair crew from fake parts.

    Un-documented maintenance

The FAA requires that any part installed on a FAA certified aircraft be FAA approved AND have installation eligibility. The previous mentioned part installed has none of this. Approved parts eligible for installation include parts listed on the aircraft’s Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS)...

    Un-documented maintenance

They are not for certified aircraft.... that's why they are sold as for experimental aircraft and do no come with an 8130. And when customers and students expect to be flying a legitimate aircraft and these parts are installed they do the entire industry a disservice. There is a reason why we...

    Un-documented maintenance

Had a fairly new customer come in the shop with a 1950's 172 they bought from a "really good guy" and GREAT mechanic and flight instructor, as the story goes. The customer said the DG was not working at all. They had been in contact with the really good guy who sold them the airplane. He told...

    chronically dragging brakes

Look at the o rings on the brake pucks themselves. The most common is MS28775-222, about .75 cents a piece and you will need 4 each. We have found that over time they become hard and do not move as freely as when first installed.

    Someone to pre-inspect a purchase

Didn't mean to quote you.....just putting info out and you wouldn't believe how many aircraft we have in that the buyer never had a pre buy or a poorly done one and then we find damage that was not noted during the sale. I have had 3 aircraft in the shop in the last 2 months and all 3 we found...

    Someone to pre-inspect a purchase

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a pre-buy done when buying an aircraft. Use a completely independent AP/IA for the inspection. You do NOT want to use the mechanic that has been maintaining it for the seller. We at GAS do NOT do pre buys on aircraft we maintain. This is an unfair advantage to the...

Mike Busch, Reliability Centered Maintenance and General Aviation

I'm not a fan. Given his theory, even if you can see metal particles in the oil, and the engine is still running making powe...so fly it until it completely fails is not the approach to maintenance.
