    2024 PPL written test

re: Sporty’s test prep…. While preparing for my last CFI renewal I came across a link to a Sporty’s site that allowed you to take a 10 question quiz from the CFI database. I was surprised that after taking the quiz 8 times that the questions began repeating. That wasn’t the big surprise. It’s...

Installing Cherokee 140 propellor on O320-E2A.

Yes, BUT I Went around with the mechanic on a Cessna 150 I owned. Turns out, he was referring to the Cessna manual and the picture in the manual is turned BACKWARDS! (Mirror image reversal). He had followed photo to confirm installation. Following text placed prop opposite photo… text is...

Installing Cherokee 140 propellor on O320-E2A.

Ever since my previous annual in ‘22, my plane has a “vibration”. That’s obviously related to the prop. At the annual, the prop was removed for the crank shaft AD inspection. Previously the plane was remarkably smooth running. Now, NOT. PREVIOUSLY, the prop would stop at the 10 o’clock position...

Continental 0-200A Newly Overhauled Oil Temp

That’s what my mechanics did. However it only affirmed what the a/c mechanical engine gauge was indicating. In my instance, oil pressure wasn’t an issue. It held 50psi cold and 35-40 hot, and 10 hot at idle. Switching oil didn’t help. Lowering magneto timing and running full rich didn’t. Taking...

Continental 0-200A Newly Overhauled Oil Temp

I had a long term perplexing problem with over heating with an O200 in a ‘67 150F. Turned out that it was the fuel nozzle in the carburetor. Many of the fuel nozzles on recent o/h kits are marginally undersized. It took several years to convince my mechanic. We ordered an oversized nozzle from...

Big Rant. 100 Hours in and no solo. Need any advice.

OP, you need to seek out another source for instruction. With an 88% on the written, and 100hrs you should be well past getting your ticket. You need an older instructor with years of experience. I’ve seen, experienced, and know of several flight schools that are what were call “dairy farms”...

    1975 421B - Toilet / Galley Questions

what with the way they whistle under pressure at 17,000’, you’ll never know. And it beats them having a dump in the floor in front of the door! On one occasion it was a 5hr flight from LaGrange,Ga to Snyder,Tx. Ferocious head winds the whole way! Owner and his wife got sick after eating a...

    1975 421B - Toilet / Galley Questions

Money Maker? Never! as the mechanic/retired charter pilot for Narrangansett Air told me: It’s an ostentatious display of wealth! They’re fabulous traveling machines, beautifully balanced controls, but have a dark soul… It’s constantly calculating a unique way to deconstruct and kill you ! I...

    1975 421B - Toilet / Galley Questions

I flew a C421B for 10yrs. There is a fitted bucket that goes in the “box” the OP described. However, being thin ABS plastic, it probably deteriorated and cracked, and was thrown away. On most of my missions, the flight was less than 2hrs, so the toilet was seldom used. The relief tube had a...

    Mooney M20 For Instrument Trainer?

I’ve trained several pilots for the instrument rating in Mooneys. The J’s were my favorite, but an F with electric gear was good too. An E with manual gear was a hand full... manual gear and manual-hydraulic flaps... It will eliminate the need for transition training and will carry over into...

C172A down near Berry Hill, Ga. S.E. Atlanta.

C172A N7275T down near Berry Hill. I looked at buying that plane several years ago. It has an STC for O300D engine and later ‘61 swept tail. It’s a vey distinctive plane. Fortunately no one hurt. saw it on tv broadcast. Hasn’t hit print yet.

    C340 down in Covington, GA

Misfueling a distinct possibility. I never allowed an -unknown to me- ramp personnel to refuel the C421 that I flew. The similar C425 had turbine engines and uses Jet-A. Twice I caught ramp technicians pull up to the 421 in a Jet-A truck. Thank Goodness for the Hoover nozzle.

New requirement to carry ad list/compliance in a/c for training/testing?

The DPE’s interpretation was that just a list of applicable ad’s and IA’s sign off stating they had been complied with was insufficient, and copy was required to accompany arow in aircraft. Stated it was a faa-wide requirement, not just Alabama FSDO. Neither was the IA’s sign off sufficient. My...

New requirement to carry ad list/compliance in a/c for training/testing?

I recently had a DPE decline to test an applicant because the ad compliance list wasn’t in the aircraft (present during oral pretest verification). A list of applicable ad’s was in maintenance log books and IA’s sign-off at last annual. (Ie: in addition to AROW) Is this new, or have I been...
