    Restoration cost - rough idea?

Yes indeed. Here’s a pic of a lower instrument panel that I finished a few months ago. Converted an original multi piece degraded plastic overlay to a one piece metal lower with new switches, breakers, engine controls, environmental controls, etc. Cost about $2,500 in parts. Labor on the other...

    Restoration cost - rough idea?

I’m doing a new 6 place leather interior with embroidery, accent pieces, arm rests, carpet, wind lace, and a few side panels. We’re at about $9,500 in interior fees, mostly for the seats. I’m doing the removal and installation myself, which is a lot of work. My best guess is it would be close to...

    Wheel Balancing

Good point. I’ve used it on 3 or 4 airplanes, but not in an attempt to eliminate a shimmy. It’s quick and easy. Definitely can tell a difference, at least with the 172. Doubt they’ve ever been balanced previously. The tires were at about 1/2 life when I pulled the wheels to clean and pack...

    Lycoming Engine replacement

Apparently change is coming. My new GMC work truck came with an hour meter located within its engine menu. It was included as standard OEM equipment. They’re probably monitoring because of the increased rate of catastrophic engine failure that GM has experienced with its 8 cyl AFM/DDM vehicles...

    A&P Schools in Fun Cities

If a fun city is your main concern check out ERAU in Daytona. I have a Bachelor’s from them but only because my company paid the tab. It’s not cheap! A&P school was on me, which is why I chose a local community college 2 year program.

Hyd leak under cabin fuselage on piper Apache pa23-150

You sure that’s hydraulic fluid? Appears to be something else. Regardless, I’d probably start with pulling the front seats and carpet to gain access for inspection. I found the carpet in an Aztec saturated with hydraulic fluid once. Source was a leaking line in the left sidewall panel and also a...

    Borescope Advice

I’ve got the VA-980-A. Purchased it in Dec of 2021. It connects to my Apple cellphone, or iPad via a small in-line wifi box. Also using a rechargeable battery pack ($20 Amazon) which is about the size of a cellphone. This allows the convenience of being able to scope in remote locations where...

Hinge Pins - Cessna and Piper

Good stuff. Thanks for the lube info! I put a thin layer of grease on the steel spacers before inserting them. Elevator isn’t attached yet though.

Another Fatal Vmc Demo Stall Spin

It was me that recognized it based on the airspeed, DG movement, and rudder input. I command the recovery. The student recognized the indications but did not initially correlate it with a VMC condition.

Another Fatal Vmc Demo Stall Spin

Years ago I used teach a lot of multi. VMC demos daily. I didn’t fully see the value at the time. Then one day I was on an approach with a multi student. Night IMC with one engine at idle. The student had been doing great and was closing in on his commercial multi. It was the last flight of a...

Hinge Pins - Cessna and Piper

Yep, they should tighten down on the inner steel bearings so there’s no wear on the bracket. I just pressed in a new set of bushings and replaced the steel bearings. What’s your preference for lubing them? Seems likely that nothing will properly penetrate between the bearing and bushing once...

    Blind rivets

Appreciate this. My Cherry supply is left overs from my airline days. All of which are CherryMax. I’ll order some MS ones for next time.

    Blind rivets

It’s the simple question of the day I know:) Just kinda been bugging me that I haven’t found a better solution for lightweight fiberglass applications such as these

    Blind rivets

They were originally installed with blind rivets and need to continue with such in these areas. Cessna 152/172/182 rudder butt, horizontal stab tips, elevator tips, etc. Finerglass to aluminum in all cases. Spruce has a nice selection of non cherry blind rivets. I’ve used them in other areas...

    Blind rivets

Any recommendations for aviation quality blind rivets to be used on fiberglass fairings? I’ve used Cherry Max in the past but that’s obviously over kill and hard to remove later. Thanks.

    A&P hourly wage.

Individual A&P/IA’s at my airport charge $85-$100 per hour depending on the situation. Most of us are pretty generous in regards to the actual time charged to private owners. Callouts typically run about $250 minimum. No one’s getting rich around here!

    Need small air compressor.

Go to Harbor Freight and purchase something reasonable. $100 should do the trick. Or pay attention to Craigslist and Marketplace for a nice used one. I’ve picked up a couple really high end compressors for little of nothing this way. You’re always going to have some moisture with compressed...
