    Why fly?

It beats being stuck in motor traffic here in California, plus the view never gets old!

    Realistic aviation movies?

I’ve always enjoyed “Executive Decision”. Kurt Russell trying to land a 747 as a newbie pilot is just classic fun. Two lesser known movies I’ve also enjoyed are “Flyboys” (WW I flick) and “Red Tails” (WW II flick).

Finding a non GPS IAF into KSNS

True, but a controller could have you intercept the radial, then clear you via the arc for the approach. Also the controller would have you on a minimum vectoring altitude for this, until established on the arc.

Finding a non GPS IAF into KSNS

You can absolutely navigate to the DME arc IAF without GPS. Fly that SNS R-107 radial to 22 DME.

Finding a non GPS IAF into KSNS

Coming from the south, I would expect that they could radar vector you to intercept the localizer. If not, then they could clear you via the 22 DME arc. If you are GPS equipped, the IAF for the arc should be in the procedure when selected. If no GPS, then you would fly via the SNS R-107 to...

I told the wife that I would never get a motorcycle...

My first true motorcycle was also the FJR1300, and I still ride it today. I learned to ride on a scooter first. Quite the jump in bikes, but I adapted well and still love my FJR. As for the experience, there’s nothing like riding the twisties out there in the mountains and countryside, an...

$100 hamburger in COVID-19 times (video)

Going to try it too now, but we’ll just get a take out from the $100 burger restaurant and eat it plane side like you guys did. Cool video, thanks for the inspiration!

How do you cover your last mile?

Folding bicycle works well enough, but hate getting all sweaty for that last mile. So I have a folding electric scooter that works well and doesn’t take up much space. Only drawback is the battery in mine is not that strong, so I would recommend getting one with a strong battery to get some...

    Asking for Pop-up IFR Clearance

Additionally, there could be a lengthy delay on the ground before takeoff as ATC waits for the proper spacing to fit you in. This is usually the case here in Northern California. Much easier to launch VFR, then pick up IFR enroute once outside the busy metro area. Pop up IFRs inbound are no...

Flying your own plane to work

I know a corporate pilot in Northern CA that does this. He lives outside the Bay Area and flies into one of the metro airports. He said that it does costs more, but is priceless due to the awful traffic that exists in the Bay Area.

SFO-500 miles radius family fun location

Yosemite is an easy visit from MPI. There is easy car rental at the airport, but just need to arrange it in advance.

    CTAF use of callsign

Sorry guys, missed the humor, newbie here!

    CTAF use of callsign

Been a lurker, but just wanted to add my two cents... Just because you don’t hear anyone on your initial call doesn’t mean no one is around. If I check in after your initial call, I wouldn’t know you’re there. So I would recommend making all calls as it helps another pilot who checks in later...
