Utah couple crashes while diverting from Shelter Cove

Preliminary report complete. Doesn't seem to add much more to the dialogue.

Utah couple crashes while diverting from Shelter Cove

I jumped in the (somewhat dated) simulator. Here is the view down runway 28.

    Nicely captured learning moment

I saw that part of the video, but wasn't sure if he switched the CDI to tracking the VOR (set to the correct radial), or just followed the bearing pointer. I am not him, by the way! But I did post this to Cleared For The Approach, but the admins moved it here. Assume any branded videos (or...

    Nicely captured learning moment

This guy captured a mistake on a departure procedure he flies all the time. Some interesting points: * A glass panel error precipitated the error * The glass panel also provided the situational awareness to correct (along with ATC) * Having redundancy with the VOR already tuned would have been...

Also, looks like 9000 ft DA. That probably didn't help.

    Approach question: KHND

Oh, right! Flip back and forth! That makes sense.

    Approach question: KHND

I was reading through the KHND VOR-B approach (attached), and noticed two sets of minimums. Based on that, I assume the approach can be flown with a single VOR only, no DME. My question is: how does one get from the IAF (the Boulder VOR) to the FAF without DME? I see the times published from...

    IAF not on IFR Charts

Thanks for the input. Interesting question if one can legally get to the IAF without vectors since there is no MEA on a chart. Seems like an alternate is the best option in this scenario.

    IAF not on IFR Charts

Hello, a couple questions came up when looking at an IFR flight to KVGT (North Las Vegas). 1) How do I get to the IAF for the RNAV12 approach (ECAKO) safely when I don't see it on the IFR Charts? Should I assume I need to use one of the published arrival procedures and get Vectors to ECAKO...

    This made me dizzy

I guess that explains why they would want to stay somewhat close to an airport and away from homes.

Does "Direct To" avoid Class B airspace?

I think I realized what happens. Upon entering the direct to, it seems to show a bit of a straight before turning on course, I think to give you time to make that turn. It wasn't specifically bending around air space. Thank you!

Does "Direct To" avoid Class B airspace?

Hello, I was playing around in the Garman 600 desktop simulator. I was under a Class B shelf at 3800 ft. I selected a waypoint Direct that should have taken me through a Class B segment at my altitude. However, it seemed to adjust the track to stay straight a bit longer, then have a slight turn...

172 Crash near KFWN (Sussex County)

Looks like preliminary report is up. Doesn't shed much light on the accident yet: On November 11, 2021, about 1048 eastern standard time, a Cessna 172S, N90559, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Branchville, New Jersey. The flight instructor and a private pilot receiving...
