    Directed variances from published altitudes?

Excellent info guys - thanks. FWIW I took my IR written a few years ago, and just after finishing flight requirements, the plane I used for training went into the shop, then again, for about 5 months. Which led into the pandemic... Long story short, just getting back into it now. I have to take...

    Directed variances from published altitudes?

When controllers are trained, they learn, somewhere, that they can assign altitudes other than published at certain times. From a pilot's perspective, this translates to what they might expect, or what not to be surprised by, when an assigned altitude doesn't match up with what's on a chart...

    Directed variances from published altitudes?

Where can we find information regarding the altitude variance allowances for ATC? thanks

    Why no HILPT here... sometimes?

Side question: can I make my images smaller here, or do I have to reduce them before linking? Could have sworn I saw something here somewhere.

    Why no HILPT here... sometimes?

Thanks everyone - Just to clarify: I'm referencing devices as viewing devices, not as data providers. Interesting that on FF it draws it differently for different transitions, though with otherwise identical flight paths. Some devices show the HILPT, some don't. Here's how it appears on my...

    Why no HILPT here... sometimes?

Thanks Mark- KMYF > CWARD2.SLI > KSNA ILS RWY 20R SAGER transition vs. SLI transition.

    Why no HILPT here... sometimes?

Thanks Mark - interesting, someone else trying it out with FF didn't get that. I'll double check with them to see which data cycle they had.

    Why no HILPT here... sometimes?

Hi all, Running a simulator (using current Navigraph and Navigraph Charts) as well as Foreflight and Garmin Pilot. RWY 20R into KSNA. Routing is via SLI, but not specifically with the SLI transition. When using the ILS approach, SLI transition, devices show the HILPT. However, when...

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

The tests also like to mix in things with the content being pretty hard to read. See below, question refers to 27R. Because of course it does. It's got to be intentional. I really like the Jeppesen charts, especially the correct scale (mostly), but can't justify the cost. One could subscribe...

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

Resolved. I was OK in maintaining my current altitude.

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

I have. Awaiting a response. Not a huge deal at the moment, since I passed this sim "test" a few years ago, albeit in a much slower, lower plane.

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

He noted that I "should be climbing for the SID" and that I was unable to continue for this particular test (i.e. failed), though I wasn't actually taking the test, which he quickly realized.

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

Hi Jim - Noted. FWIW the service is a paid service, and I believe the controllers are actual controllers. (Everyone makes mistakes sometimes...) I also don't mistake my simulator for conveying the "feel" of the planes, which some people LOVE to complain about. If it's close, I'm fine with it...

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

Thanks Larry - I went back to the recording. The directions were: "right turn to 340, when able direct RAYVE, resume departure, climb via SID." When busted, I asked about it, and the description from the controller had "maintain FL210" added into it. It clearly wasn't there the first time, but...

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

Thanks - As above - my question is regarding what's required, rather than what would be best to do, or make the most sense, or anticipated by ATC, etc. Agreed though - next time I'll start the climb, then look ahead at my flight plan.

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

Thanks again Jim - as noted above - I was done with my instrument rating, and about ready for the checkride, but it was a few years ago & I'm catching up now. Since it's on the test, I like flying it. (I mean, plus... it's fun.) I think I was leaning toward (B) since it notes vertical nav being...

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

:) Gotcha. Normally I think I would have. lol... Yeah, "ground speed" didn't feel as three-dimensional when I was visualizing it, I guess. Anyway - back to the original question - all other things being equal, when is the pilot required to begin the climb? (emphasis mine) FAR: "Clearance to...

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

Thanks Jim - it's a CJ4. Was doing about 200kts. I was roughly 1 minute from RAYVE, then 4000 to make SLAPP @ 13k. The CJ4 climbs pretty well that low, and obviously the lateral speed is decreased quite a bit in a fast climb.

Climb via SID: when are you required to climb?

Thanks guys - FYI this is on a simulator w/ human controllers - @tsts4 - was assigned an altitude of 9000 during departure with a cruise altitude of FL21 on file. @jimhorner, wasn't really hanging out as much as checking SID altitudes & FMS. I planned on initiating the climb in about 30...
