Do you plan on flying (or traveling in general) to see the eclipse on April 8th?

I'll fly GA (Piper Arrow) just under 500NM. I have a second home and hangar that are in the path of totality. My wife will be with me. Having said that, even if weather conditions won't allow viewing at our destination, we'll still fly there to enjoy a long weekend.

Border security helo down with fatalities 3/10/2024

Current instructor at FT. Novosel (Rucker) here. Autorotations haven’t been taught to the ground in some time. All the helicopters that the students train on are multi-engine. Army regulation prohibits autorotations to the ground in multi-engine helicopters, so all are terminated with power. So...

    Eagle, CO

Congrats on the house purchase and good luck with the future airplane purchase. Great looking view! FYI, we were at Carson at the same time. I was with 4th ID and 3rd ACR from 94-97.

    Mechanical tach fail

Flew last night to reestablish my night pax carrying currency. Failing tachs must be going around. Although different failure mode for me. The RPM needle on my tach was fine and was stable on my selected RPM. But the recording (hours) part of my tach didn't advance at all. I'm guessing just an...

Are there pilots who've never used paper maps?

By the looks of your map, I’m guessing you went thru flight school between 1992 & 2000.

Are there pilots who've never used paper maps?

IERW students still make and navigate by the old Australian fold 1:50K!!!

    2024 Goals

Live in Alabama, bought a condo in Indiana in August. Been flying up a lot. So I guess my 2024 goals are not to pick up ice! :)

    Hover Training

@Velocity173 Man the SOP pic you posted sure looks like an old SOP from KSXS. My current stomping grounds!! And that's still what's allowed with the current SOP. Of course, despite being a towered heliport, KSXS is class G airspace, not D. ;)

    Cleaning GAMI injectors

I don't have GAMIs but do run LOP with stock injectors. Clean them at every annual. Approx 100-150 hrs annually. Use Hoppe’s 9 Gun Solvent then mineral spirits, then blow them dry. Works well.

Anywhere in FL to rent a raft?

A second for the FBO at Fort Pierce, KFPR. The FBO no longer rents them, but an independent company does. But it will be left for you at the FBO & that’s where you’ll drop it too. Super easy process. Fair prices. And of course customs is right next door and the FBO has a restaurant inside. I...

    Quick back to back approaches…..Normal?

Couldn’t agree more. This was an Army helicopter pilot adding on an instrument rating to his ASEL rating. Somehow he saw asking for a delay vector or a vector to a fix not in his plan as admitting defeat. Finally got him to realize it’s just another tool and a useful one. But I did love his...

    Quick back to back approaches…..Normal?

A recent trainee of mine liked to call these "panic vectors". As in everything I use when I teach, jokes included, I stole that too.

    Ducking for helo blades?

Or just fly a helicopter with a rigid rotor and short stubby blades. I'm looking at you EC-145. Unless they're entering/exiting up a steep slope, people couldn't hit the rotor blades if they tried. :)

    Teterboro (KTEB) IFR arrival routing?

Ended up going on Delta. Weather looked bad for the return trip and we didn’t have the luxury of pushing the return trip a day early or late to allow for bad weather. Turned out to be a good call. Very poor weather (thunderstorms) for a decent portion of the route home.
