For an ATD, see AC61-136 appendix 4, page 4.... 3. LOGGING TRAINING TIME AND EXPERIENCE. Authorized instructors utilizing an FAA-approved ATD for airmen training, pilot time, and experience requirements are required to log the time as dual instruction and as basic aviation training device...

I do teach recognition of and recovery from a (pseudo) spiral dive as part of unusual attitude/upset recovery in case they get into IMC. I also teach the steep spiral as a technique that could be used to lose altitude in a glide in the event of an engine failure right above or very near an...

    Cessna flight training course

Probably the 2 other main reading materials you'll hear cited for a private pilot in training are the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK) and Airplane Flying Handbook (AFH), both of which are free to download from the FAA website. Another good free download for reference, not for...

    Drug test

Or, not dissimilar to alcohol, don't smoke cannabis within a time frame that could make you positive on a possible drug test requested by your aviation (or other) employer...until they change the rules.

    Drug test

Well, if people on this forum are going to render judgement onto other posters....then I think all alcohol, tobacco, and non prescription narcotics and even some herbal products should be outlawed....but those darn lobbyists have such a strong influence. Oh how I yearn for the National...

Agree 100%. As long as it's been >8 hours, most people fly (and drive) better with a BAC of < 0.03999999%.

    Drug test

Yeah, stay away from alcohol, cigarettes, CBD, THC, everything! Oh, wait, EtoH is ok as long as you don't have too much in your system when you fly....

    Drug test

This drug issue will be complicated by all the hype around CBD given that some studies have found that 20-25% of “pure” CBD products actually contained THC & resulted in + drug screens.

    Drug test

Cannot find any definitive info regarding OSHA reporting the drug testing results to the FAA. The info on the site below suggest the employer must report the info, but I'm not sure if that pertains to non-aviation employers, non-federal employers, etc...

Agree w above. That means that 40 hours of the xc pic could have been in something like a helicopter but at least 10 hours need to be in an airplane.

§61.189: Flight Instructor Records -- What's a good practice for this?

Interesting that you retain a document with the student's signature confirming that you provided them that instruction. Personal preference or did someone try to dispute that you provided them with specific training after they had an accident?

    Alternate Required

Agree that the TAF is the "official" source, but he didn't have a TAF for 1 hr after his arrival. I was just indicating that the student could have (in theory) counter argued with the statement that, while it's impossible to predict how fast the ceiling would actually drop, given the TAF data...
