    Flying GA in Hawaii

My wife and I are renting a 172 with CFI at Maui Aviators the end of this month. Should beat our Montana WX.

    Helena, MT in early September

This morning is the worst I’ve seen it here in GTF this season. 5-10 sm vis. It’s still not as bad as it has been in the past few years. I like to use the NOAA HRRR smoke forecast model… https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/smoke/index.html#

    Helena, MT in early September

I live and fly out of Great Falls. Definitely take a drive up (down?) I-15 from Helena north to the Gates of the Mountains (15 min N of HLN). Take the boat tour if it’s still happening. You’ll be able to see the site of the 1949 Mann Gulch fire tragedy, and other area rich in Lewis & Clark...

[NA] Do you delete your old text messages?

I keep all of my texts, even though I know that the NSA keeps back ups for me just in case ;)

    Home Flight Simulators—What’s Your Setup?

Same here, but I went with the prepackaged XForcePC PilotWorkshops prepackaged setup. Should arrive this week. I also added the Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo yoke/throttle combos.

    Starlink Beta - Impressive

I live in Montana, and have paid $100/mo for 2 to 7 down and 0.5 up (only if on a good day). The signal source was microwave to a tower. But I finally got ‘selected’ to try the beta Starlink. I’ve had it now for about 3 months. I average about 40 down and 15 up, but have recently been getting...

Still hope for your significant other…

That’s awesome. Next thing you know…you’ll be fighting to see who gets to fly left seat.

    My Wife's First Solo

That’s awesome! My wife soloed last summer and it was pretty neat to watch her do it (her CFI clued me in so she had no idea I was there). She got her ticket in Dec. As someone mentioned above, be prepared for a battle over who gets to be PIC. I’ve noticed that ATC is more ‘friendly’ to her than me

Dakota Dual-Mag Overhaul: Kelly or Quality Aircraft?

Shop got our D3000 back this week. I don’t have the report in hand, but ~$1600 from Kelly. Basically an IRAN. Replaced points, replaced one cap, and one gear had a damaged tooth.

They quit doing dual mag repairs...unfortunately

Dakota Dual-Mag Overhaul: Kelly or Quality Aircraft?

Unfortunately there is no surefly option for these dual mags.

Dakota Dual-Mag Overhaul: Kelly or Quality Aircraft?

The D3000 on our Dakota should be back to the A&P this week. He sent it to Kelly Aerospace. Not sure on the cost yet.

    Pellet Grills

I have had a pellet grill for about 3 years. It’s a Yoder brand smoker from...Yoder, KS! It’s built like a tank. But I’m sure any of them will work great. It only takes 10-12 min to get up to smoking temp. It’s awesome for brisket and tri-tip. As you mentioned, I think they give more precise...

Fixed Leg Options for 3-4 people 135 or more kts

We got a Dakota a year ago for $109k. STEC 55x, 650 and G5’s. Love it. Our first and likely last plane. Fits our needs. 134 TAS with pants on. 129 without. 1200+ useful load, 72 gal tanks. Both my wife and I recently became PPL’s in our 50’s. Have to fight her to get left seat. Only thing I...

True vs magnetic vs compass heading tricks?

I was taught, “If it’s printed, it’s true”. With one major exception being runway number markings .

    Sheepskin Seat Covers

We had a set that came with the plane we bought last year. We threw them away. Didn’t want someone else’s arse sweat. Plus they were itchy.
