Don't ask, just do it. You'll be famous, and you'll write a book and give a presentation at every gathering of aviators. Let us know about the aliens and Elvis.

    Upside-Down Letters

I now know way more than any pilot should about this subject. I wonder how much whiskey it's going to take to forget it.

Owning a Saratoga with zero time in model and insurance

I self-insured until I had about 60 hours in type, called the agent back and got a way-better rate.

Planning a trip to Airventure 2022

Yes, they have a shuttle service between the university and the airport; very convenient. Chow hall food at the university is great, cheap, all-you-can-eat.

ILAFFT: Almost Killed my Family on an Instrument Approach

Twenty years in sims watching crews brief approaches. Many pilots just read out loud the approach info; not very helpful. The pros brief how they will fly the approach, while incorporating all the chart info into the story. Often, there's a significant difference in the results. For example, the...

Why are pilots so hesitant to declare an emergency?

Yes, only 165 hrs in it, Georgia ANG, 1985.

Why are pilots so hesitant to declare an emergency?

Flew fighters, so I’ve declared “Emergency” more times than I can remember. Paperwork? Never! Say the E word early and you’ll be glad you did.

Tips, how to make smooth landings

Smooth is not the most important thing about landing. Nail these first: On centerline, fuselage lined up with the centerline, little or no lateral drift. By the time you get these nailed, a smooth landing will seem easy.

    VHF Base Station

Build a wood mock up of your favorite old airplane's instrument panel. Add old worthless instruments that your A&P has laying around (none need to work). Add your radio to the panel. Now, it has the proper context it deserves.

Jets really don’t like flying low...

"Go to 320 and spend an extra 25 min but with enough fuel to be safe." Excellent aeronautical decision making.

WWYD - looking at a PA28 that's been sitting a year after prop strike

IMHO, there are too many unknowns about this aircraft. It's a project aircraft, fit only for those with the skills to do a lot of work on it. The market has plenty of alternatives with a lot lower risk.

Flying W in NJ is going away.

I knew Bill Whitesell. Great guy. Came to Embry-Riddle late in his life to get a degree. I was 18 and he was my 48-yo fraternity brother. Greatly missed. He'd be very sad to see what's happening to his airport.

Pros and cons of buying a hanger on class D airfield

Check the lease for a paragraph or two about "reversion." It might mean you have to transfer title to the hangar building to the Lessee at the expiration or termination of the lease. Ok for a business who builds the loss into the business plan and gets to depreciate the cost of the hangar. Not...

    Personal Minimums for Instrument Currency

Great question MauleSkinner. Departure weather mins 1000/3, maybe a little less if a takeoff alternate is close by. Enroute weather mins 1000/3, maybe a little less for a brief overfly of LIFR. Honestly, both situations don't lend themselves well to "never" proclamations. When in doubt, such...

Talk me out of building a Van's RV

I bought my RV 8. The way I look at it... I had a guy build it for me. I paid for parts and supplies, but didn't pay a dime for his labor. Happy with the way it worked out. More years flying instead of building, which is important since I'm 67. The builder experience? That starts in June when I...
