Any piston engines that fly above FL250?

No one has mentioned the Mustang? Isn't this a pilot forum? And to hell with being reasonable... "reasonable answers only" wasn't part of the question, was it? :)

At 39 - go Basic Med?

Another 39 year old here. Went BasicMed last year and won't look back. I don't fly in Canada (although I think Canada will eventually accept BasicMed) and the aircraft I operate qualifies. No reason to continue to deal with a pass/fail if I don't have to.

AirVenture summary & observations about the aviation community

Not far off of 50/50, honestly. I'd guess somewhere around 60/40.

AirVenture summary & observations about the aviation community

Well, my first EAA AirVenture is in the books. I flew in on Monday (commercial, not in my plane) and flew out Saturday night (6 whole days surrounded by and immersed in planes!). Overall, I was blown away... the presentations, the atmosphere, the sheer number of aircraft on site, and the flying...

Approved for special issuance but lifetime monitoring... feeling really bummed out

Not an expert here, but... ask yourself: - Does the plane I intend to fly have a certificated take off weight greater than 6,000 lbs? - Do I plan to carry more than six occupants? - Do I plan to fly above 18,000 ft? - Do I plan to fly at greater than 250 kts? - Do I plan to fly for compensation...

Microsoft Flight Simmer takes a real flight lesson

Great write up! I too was an avid flight simmer (still am, actually) from a young age (as far back as I can remember), and a few years ago at the age of 33 my wife said I have to just go get a private pilots license. Fast forward 5 years to today, we own a 1971 Cessna 177B Cardinal, and my wife...

    XC Rules

I thought that I'd be able to do a manual flight plan piece of cake after not doing one (at least in any meaningful way) since my PPL... my wife is getting her PPL right now, and I tried to help her one night... took a few tries to brush the dust off.

    XC Rules

All of the above posts make the point clear that there are no "rules" prohibiting you from using your GPS for direct navigation. Since this is in the pilot training forum, just some additional thoughts: 1) What types of airspace would a direct route have you crossing / flying through? 2) Are...

Flew a C177R Cardinal Yesterday for the First Time

An FG Cardinal owner here (1971 177B). We've owned our plane for a couple years now and fly about 100 hrs per year. No issue finding parts (so far). The only thing to be aware of is the Cessna service bulletin on the spar... other than that, Cardinals are no more hassle than any other small...

    Phoenix Valley experience and help

I'd second the recommendation to join Cardinal Flyers... it really is a standout amongst aviation organizations dedicated to a type. I'd also point out that their president provides services to locate and get a quality pre-buy when looking for a Cardinal. They also have an active classifieds...

    Phoenix Valley experience and help

A Cardinal owner here... the pros and cons, in my opinion: Pros: - As a few have mentioned, the doors are huge and offer very easy in/out access relating to width. Note that as a high-wing plane, you're still ducking down to miss the wing on entry/exit. - The cabin is quite wide for a 4-place...

    Origin of “Skylane”

Not sure "177 Cardinal" quite fits the trend either... where did that come from?

    Help me understand....

I guess I was giving the author the benefit of the doubt in his analysis of "high speed, low altitude fly-by"... he was commander and flight leader of the Thunderbirds, so I guess he'd have a good take on both speed and altitude?

    Help me understand....

    "then accelerated in a high-speed, low-altitude fly-by"... from the article. :)

    Help me understand....

Based on the context, I interpreted Mr McSpadden's take on the "backcountry incident" as a brief, undetailed description of a pilot hot-dogging, potentially in a dangerous way, for spectators. I don't think he was trying to convince the reader that what the pilot had done was wrong, only that it...

    What Is Your Favorite Plane

F-14: The most iconic fighter aircraft of my generation. Cessna 177B: As Stills said, love the one you're with.

    Hobbies other than flying

Kind of interesting to see the commonality in pilot hobbies... I'm into cycling (mountain biking and road), running, fishing, hiking, really anything outdoors.

    Lycoming O-360 LOP or ROP?

I too found the Mike Busch perspective from this month's AOPA Pilot magazine interesting. For those asking, the article is titled "Why Valves Stick" and is in the new July 2020 issue. He says that he has recommended for a long time keeping CHTs no higher than 400F for continentals or 420F for...

    Air-to-Air Cessna 182

Blown away! Who knew the 182 was such a looker? Truly exceptional photos of a beautiful plane. Thanks for making my day!
