France is indeed GA friendly, I can specifically recommend Montpellier / Beziers / Perpignan on the Mediterranean Sea. There are a bunch of nice airfields in the central parts too, and quite a few more like Le Touquet in the northwest. People are generally very friendly and relaxed. However...

For me, phone hasn´t been the primary function anymore for a number of years. It´s my calender, camera, scanner, browser, email/messenger tool, navigation device, logbook, exercise tracker, wallet, bank clerk, music box. And then I sometimes use it for a call or two.

Carat A In EASA-world it´s a motorglider, in the US it´s an experimental glider. It has a 54hp engine (basically a VW beetle engine) and is good for 105kts and 500NM range at about 2,5gal/hr. Flying with the engine off it has reasonable gliding qualities.

At least you were within an hour´s flighttime to your real destination. A couple of years ago some Italians booked a flight to Sydney but ended up in Canada instead of in the southern hemisphere.

I don´t go to places first time at night if no VASI or PAPI. A friend of mine was shocked when he saw a big (unlighted, apparently) antenna close to the approach path the morning after his landing.

Glider flying with a parachute is common practice back in Europe. In the US not so much, but it´s not uncommon. Gliders tend to converge to the best thermals, I´ve flown with 20+ gliders close together in a weak thermal, that´s not funny. The risk of collision is there. I know a guy and a girl...
