    AOA Indicator: Pneumatic vs electronic?

I plan to add an angle of attack indicator to my Cessna 150. There are two that are reasonably priced that I'm looking at. One uses only air flow and reads out on a gauge: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/liftmonitor.php? ...and the other is electronic and reads out with a row...

Going for my Recreational Pilot's Certificate... questions

Hell to all and thank you for any useful advice you can provide me. I'm well along with my pilots training but feel at this point given my age and needs and desires, going on to get a private pilots certificate will be more or less worthless for me. I can always pursue that later, if I so...

    Painting wing areas

The C150 I'm looking at purchasing has some paint bubbling from corrosion on the outer skin. Mechanic says this can be fixed by cleaning, etching, priming and repainting. Anyone done this and how difficult/costly a process for the DIY? UPDATE: Found this. Looks simple enough to do, actually.

Is there a second engine hour meter?

The mechanic doing the pre-buy on the C150 I'm looking at says the time on that engine is 1850 hours. The hour meter in the cockpit, that I saw, said 1680 hours. Is there another hour meter and where is it and which is correct?

    MOGAS and the free overhaul

Read an interesting article this morning about how using MOGAS in your plane, assuming it will run on it, can save you enough $$ to pay for your next overhaul. It's also better for the engine in that it has no lead to foul up the plugs. Also, better for the environment, again, because no lead is...

Sales tax on buying a plane?

If I purchase a plane sitting in another state from my own, where do I pay the sales tax? Also, in terms of the local/sate property tax, is it the same as buying a car... whereas (in the case of a car) when you go to register the DMV does not accept the price on the Bill of Sale, they go by...

    ADS-B by 2020?

Looking at a single with Mode C but not with ADS-B out as will be required by 2020. The seller states it's not an issue unless you fly within 60NM of a commercial airport. I cannot see how one will not find themselves in such a situation here in the Northeast if even by accident. How costly...

Tie down on grass vs asphalt

When I contacted one of the local muni airports about fees for ties downs the fellow gave me the price for grass and asphalt. When I asked which was better he said if it was his plane he'd go with asphalt because grass will cause more damage from moisture. The airport closest to me has only...

    How is the yoke secured?

How is the yoke secured to the shaft, by set screw or is it pinned through? I ask because so many yokes are missing all their paint.

Factor's leading to a complete overhaul?

I understand hours alone is not all that determines when an older plane may need a complete engine overhaul... so what are the factors an owner needs to look at when purchasing a used plane from the 60's? So far I have: 1) total engine hours 2) when the last overhaul was done 3) compression...

    Engine compression?

If I'm inspecting the logs for a plane I'm interested in purchasing and I find, in the annuals, the engine compression is dropping a few points each year.... how much of a concern is that? For instance: in 2017 it's 76/80 for #1, in 2018 it's 73/80 for #1 Also, how far apart can they be from...

Can I get my medical before beginning training for PLL?

I'm 65 and wish to go back and complete my PLL started some time ago. My health is excellent, but I'd like to get cleared by am AME before plunking down $$ for training only to find out I cannot fly for some reason. Is this doable?

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

Wondering if I can get some input on buying a Cherokee 140 to earn my PPL in and then have as my own plane afterwards? From what I've read, it seems to be an easy plane to fly and even easier to land, offers decent economy fuel wise and reasonable repair and overhaul costs. The con I'm...

PLL training: Flight school or own-a-plane route?

So, by now you folks have read my other posts. Want to go back and complete my PPL from years ago. Where I live now in Connecticut is in the sticks. There is a privately owned but open to the public airstrip called Goodspeed just 10 miles from me. Not much, gravel runway, no tower, no service...

Lost log book woes : (

I'm fairly certain I have lost my old student pilot log book. I moved a while back and lots of stuff from the basement, where this was, got tossed or misplaced. Have not flown since 1986, when I began my journey to become a PPL but had to give it up after my first solo. Anyway, according to...

MSF as an aid in learning to fly

Hell to all. My first post. A bit of background... took flying lessons for several months back in 1986, passed the written and soloed, got my student certificate then had to give up for various "life" reasons. Now, semi-retired and in excellent health, I want to complete what I started, buy a...
