    Cleared to a fix…now what?

LIGMA was made up. The name of the fix was irrelevant, but meant to give a laugh. The main point of the question was what do you do when directed to a fix on an approach, but not given further clearance and not cleared for the approach. And the radio is too busy to query ATC? You’re rapidly...

    Cleared to a fix…now what?

So I get cleared to a fix on an approach. “N12345 proceed direct LIGMA, descend maintain 2,000.” So I descend and maintain 2,000 and fly to the fix. As I approach the fix the controller is busy and forgets about me. No further clearance has been given. Beyond querying the controller, what...

Aztec down - Treasure Cay Bahamas

I’m wondering if that was a different flight. One of the accident websites says he was departing, lost the engine on takeoff and put it down in the trees.

    CFI signing off questionable flight

Great way to build real world experience. It’s ok to fly to other places besides the traffic pattern and practice area.

    Questions to ask perspective CFII???

Ask them how they start out with introduction to IFR flying? Do they just throw you in an airplane and expect you to learn everything or do you spend lots of time hangar flying and doing some ground school also? Flying IFR is not just about shooting approaches. There is a lot of method and...

Plane crashes into homes in San Diego, Ca

Cry openly on frequency if you have to. Convey the message you are disoriented and losing control of the airplane. You need vectors immediately while you get back to flying the plane safely. Never be afraid to say “I don’t understand” “I need help” or “unable”.

Plane crashes into homes in San Diego, Ca

Don’t be afraid to ask for vectors. If they give you “fly the missed approach and contact xxx.xx” tell them you are behind the airplane and need immediate vectors. I saw a CFI commenting about learning from this to better teach his students. I don’t know if he already teaches this or not…but...

Plane crashes into homes in San Diego, Ca

Instrument rating and instrument proficiency are two totally different things. Maybe he was too reliant on the autopilot? Maybe he got the leans… who knows. One thing is for certain…don’t be afraid to tell ATC you are behind the airplane and need help especially when close to the ground. Tell...

    What’s your on course heading?

I have run into this several times on the ground and also in the air. Why does ATC sometimes ask you what your oncourse heading is to the destination? This has been asked after I was given my clearance.

Challenger Jet down in Truckee CA 7/26/21

So is the tailwind limitation only applied to the approach segment? Help me understand why you couldn’t fly the RNAV 11 because of a tailwind limitation, but you could fly a circle to land for 11?

Challenger Jet down in Truckee CA 7/26/21

It makes more sense now. The big loop before the airport was him establishing a lap in the hold while ATC was setting up his clearance for the approach. And he did indeed circle to land for runway “length”. I went back and listened to the tape again. The only part that doesn’t make sense is why...

Challenger Jet down in Truckee CA 7/26/21

Flightwriter…that flight path does not show a “circle to land” approach. Typically if you circle to land…you fly the approach for one runway, then stay within the protected area of the airport and switch to another runway. A circle to land does not entail doing 360’s out by a FAF or on an...

Why are pilots so hesitant to declare an emergency?

I had to declare after a passenger riding right seat slumped over unconscious. ATC was great. No paperwork.

Any tips for a pilot starting instrument?

Have an instructor explain approaches and map a few out on the ground with road cones or something similar. Then walk through the approach as if you were flying it. I think this makes it much easier to comprehend all the stuff thrown on an approach plate the first few times you do it. Trying...
