    Garmin G5 software update

I think that many of the changes affected both HSI (HI,DG) and AI functions, and if you have any of the other items that are also updated, lots of changes were made to each of them, as well. The overall system runs much more smoothly now at V6.0 than V5.0 when first installed. Also, your...

    Garmin G5 software update

I just found out there is a new Garmin G5 software Update 6.0. If you have a certified G5 in your panel, the pilot/owner/operator is allowed to update per the STC instructions. Here's the link: https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=10739#Instruct When you install this...

    ADS-B 978 vs 1090

OK, I understand. You clearly know more about the overall system than I. The main reason I configured dual-out was because I was told that that configuration would trigger the ground stations at the farthest possible distance. Otherwise, I would have configured only 1090 out and dual-in.

    GPSS - STEC ST-901 vs Garmin G5

I have now flown about 20 hours using 1.25 scale factor, and I no longer see any 'hunting' and acquisition seems quick. Looks like that is the best for me! I'm going to leave it there. Russ N52636, 1977 C177RG CFI, CFII

    ADS-B 978 vs 1090

John, from fringe distances from ground stations, (in the midwest mainly) sometimes I will trigger them with 978 and sometimes with 1090. Depending on which one triggers them determines whether the reply will be TIS-B or ADS-R, right? I can see on Foreflight and/or Garmin Pilot, both ADS-R and...

    ADS-B 978 vs 1090

I have been running both 1090 and 978 out for about five years now (in addition to dual-in as well). I was one of the FAA beta test pilots for being able to use dual-out. My area was from Savannah to Jacksonville. Initially, there were many problems, two targets for one aircraft, seeing your own...

    GPSS - STEC ST-901 vs Garmin G5

After reducing it to 1.5, I found it was still 'hunting' while tracking a GPSS course, only noticeable in very calm air. So, I reduced it to 1.0. Now it no longer hunts, but it is a bit sluggish when intercepting a GPSS course, and it takes a long time to get perfectly centered on the course...

G5 AI converter to drive century IIIC?

I understand what you are saying, and I am not an expert on the GAD29B. However, I have learned how it works in my plane. In my Cardinal RG, the GAD29B is used to generate the 'Heading' input for my STEC 30 autopilot. The Heading input on most analog autopilots was traditionally used for only...

G5 AI converter to drive century IIIC?

I understand the difference between a rate based and attitude based autopilots. What I don't understand is why Garmin lists the Century III as capable with the G5 HSI. Is the C-III compatible with the G5 HSI (and not the G5 AI)?

    ADS-B 978 vs 1090

Well, I fly low altitude IFR in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia regularly, and the Moncton Center recently verified that they already have ADS-B equipment in use there. This gives them more information than a normal Transponder with Mode C. In fact, they offered me better than normal handling into...

    ADS-B 978 vs 1090

This circular has been cancelled and replaced by AC20-165B. The text says the following: "Do not install a UAT ADS-B OUT system with the capability to transmit a random 24-bit address in an aircraft that also has a Mode S transponder unless the random 24-bit feature is disabled. The ATC...

G5 AI converter to drive century IIIC?

As you may know, the G5 interfaces to many different analog autopilots using the GAD29B converter. I have copied only the Century autopilots that will interface from page 128 of the G5 installation manual: *** Quote *** 5.15 GAD 29B Interface to Non-Garmin Autopilots This section only applies...

    GPSS - STEC ST-901 vs Garmin G5

I just got back from checking my G5 'scale factor' setting at my hangar, and found it was set to 2.0. I reduced it to 1.5 but there is too much wind to flight check it today. Now, we have hurricane Michael headed our way, so it might be a week or so before I will get a really calm day to check it.

    GPSS - STEC ST-901 vs Garmin G5

I have an S-Tec 30, and two G5's installed in my C177RG, and I removed the ST901 GPSS. The G5 GPSS tracking works fine except I now find the autopilot very slowly hunts left and right about 1 degree each way as it tracks a straight line course using GPSS from the G5. It is barely noticeable and...
