Flew under a 172 at 17,000’ near PHX.

Yep! Wasn't he actually texting from that flight?

Massport found a way to effectively kill GA at BOS

I fly into Boston pretty often but always go to Norwood. They like my 172 a lot more than the folks at BOS. :) Not sure how well they handle the corporate crowd but they've always treated me really well.

    Interesting sight on the rails

Cool video! Thanks for posting that. I didn't realize that these planes started out as rail cargo. :)

    What is your favorite pie?

I like lots of different pies -- both the making of and the eating of -- but the Atlantic Beach Pie is my current favorite. It's pretty awesome. :) https://www.ourstate.com/one-phenomenal-pie/

Would you VFR night fly with these simple instruments?

This. I'd be uncomfortable flying at night with that panel without an AI. In a pinch, Foreflight with a Stratus will provide a panel page but I wouldn't choose to put myself in that position without a really, really persuasive reason.

    Who's in Chicago?

Hey, Mike! Glad you made it. Lots of good folks here, including a few near Chicago/Lake Geneva who thought that they might be able to give you a ride. Welcome to aviation, Mike! It's a great world, populated by some of the nicest people on Earth. :) Brian

    AA Captain Dies In Flight

At this point, I'm guessing the family is simply wondering how they will live their lives without him. RIP :(

Poll: Are you over or under 170lbs?

    Less than 170. :)

    Who's in Chicago?

Thanks, Grant. :) I've suggested he register here. He's starting a brand-new job today (Monday), so I imagine he's got his hands full but expect he'll be along presently.

The Cheapest AND the Most Stable EFB / ADS-B Solution

I'm pretty happy with my Stratus. I'm also pretty satisfied with Foreflight/Stratus's decision to not show traffic. Even though we all know that any ADSB-in traffic display would likely show only some of the traffic some of the time, there would be a very human inclination to start thinking...

    Flying to other cities?

I'm near the end of a long XC from upstate NY to South Dakota and back. The route of flight took me from NY-PA-OH-IN-IL-WI-MN-SD-NE-IO-IL and when I finish up in the next day or two IL-OH-PA-NY, for a total of about 4000 NM. Over the last six years, I've flown my plane fairly long distances...

    Who's in Chicago?

I heard back from Michael late last night. It turns out that yesterday was his last day at the restaurant. He's recently out of college and, in his words, he's "on to be an engineer of gamma cameras used in nuclear medicine". I had a suspicion that he's a smart guy! He has a car and is...

    Who's in Chicago?

Wouldn't that be fun? :) I sent him an email. When he gets back to me, I'll update the thread. Thanks!

    Who's in Chicago?

I would, too. In fact, if I can't find him a flight, I'll fly back from NY and give him a ride myself. Cool! I'll let him know. :D:D:D Good question! I'll email him and ask and post what I find out. I can understand that but I've offered flights to people who I only knew as friends of...

    Who's in Chicago?

I don't know. He works at Beatrix, in the loop, but I would imagine could get to any airport that's reasonably accessible. When I told him that I'd post this, he asked me "Would these people be safe and trustworthy?" I thought that was a good question. I told him that most pilots are...

    Who's in Chicago?

I flew from NY to Rapid City, South Dakota last week, expecting to continue on to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, high winds and clouds over the mountains made crossing the Rockies at that point questionable. We explored the Black Hills and had fun for a few days and then I sent my passenger back...

Aborted takeoff, engine not producing full power

Having had a partial engine failure at 450 AGL due to a stuck exhaust valve, I would tend to agree with you. The plane was shaking like mad (my 172, O300, but still...) However, having had the valve unstuck, a few days and a few states later I heard something that just didn't sound exactly...

Aborted takeoff, engine not producing full power

I wondered about sticking valves, too, when I read the OP's account. That would easily account for the loss of RPM he was seeing.

Aborted takeoff, engine not producing full power

You may be right, Ron. I wonder if anyone here flies that engine in the winter and has an accurate temp gauge?

Aborted takeoff, engine not producing full power

OP: Excellent job on making what was without a doubt a disappointing but also without a doubt the right decision. Taking a suspect plane into the air is never the right decision if you can avoid doing so. I had an E-I engine analyzer added to my 172G. It's taught me a lot about that O-300...
