    Equivalent automotive parts

It's worth mentioning that the current state of the automotive parts market it a lot different than back in 1970. Many big brands who made parts for our planes now have several sub-brands and parallel product lines. Usually retail automotive aftermarket is the most cost cut of them.

Can you reproduce part data tags?

I used my thermal transfer printer with a polyester label and resin ribbon. Cut to size with a ruler and Swiss Army knife. If anyone needs a new tag, tire pressure stickers, etc message me and I’d be happy to print it out and put it in the mail. It’s only 203 DPI so smaller text isn’t that sharp.

Can you reproduce part data tags?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I don’t think these calipers have serial numbers, only month/year of production. I’ll have to take another look at my data label mounting area to see if there is room for simply adding without removing others tags. I made a quick prototype with some errors...

Can you reproduce part data tags?

Can an owner, A&P, owner and A&P, etc reproduce a worn data tag that was on a component? My brake caliper data stickers are quite worn and falling off. I like having bolt torque and part number easily visible for anyone working on it. One caliper is getting cleaned and resealed at annual so it...

    Fix, Simplify or Start Over?

Thanks again for the replies everyone , I’ve done some more investigation and I’m now convinced my biggest issues are antenna and coax related. My com antennas have around 1 ohm resistance between the mounting screws and the aluminum they are mounted to. Actually one is worse than the other. My...

    Fix, Simplify or Start Over?

Great thread! I'm not ready to spend major $$ on avionics yet due to my low requirements (com, intercom and transponder) and upcoming overhaul but if it turns into a keeper your panel is similar to where I'd take it eventually. How do you like the panel-mount Aera 660? It's a 1971 172 that I...

    Fix, Simplify or Start Over?

Haha yeah this wouldn’t be a good avionics thread without $70k of Garmin and $35k of Cessna. It’s an obviously worn out Skyhawk with lots of other small but plentiful issues. At this point I’m just trying to be a safe VFR pilot. I saw a YouTube video of a guy with a similarly problematic...

    Fix, Simplify or Start Over?

I'm not an avionics tech but after giving my avionics a good visual inspection there are a lot of problems. My panel is typical junk: King KMA 20 TSO audio panel (When listening to com 1 on phones you can faintly hear com 2) Narco MK12D replacement for a field-installed RT308 (Nav...

    Aerobatics in a Warrior

Can't blame a Piper owner for worrying about it folding up on them.

Fix up my plane or rent for instrument rating?

The plane needs an IFR pitot/static check, a clock and whatever is keeping both NAVs from working fixed. So base price on parts and labor might be $1000-$1500 but I'm doubling that because every plane project I've done so far has doubled as we found hidden problems. At that point it would have...

Fix up my plane or rent for instrument rating?

Long story short, should I: Spend 2-3 AMUs to make my plane /U IFR and do my IR with that. or Spend the money renting a plane for at least a big chunk of my IR. I really don't plan to be going into IMC with this plane. I do want to enhance my cross country and busy airspace skills as well...

Engineer's take on the 737 MAX design

The government won't certify a car engine that can't run when a single sensor is giving bad data but the FAA gave a pass to an airplane that won't fly when a single sensor is giving bad outputs. Oh but aviation is different.

Engineer's take on the 737 MAX design

They changed the wing significantly on the -700, still no new TC?

Engineer's take on the 737 MAX design

So why can't they just redesign the forward fuselage and inboard wing section to provide room for taller gear? They designed this thing in a matter of months in mid 60s and now 8000+ planes with workarounds to the short gear later they're still using it?

SI consideration for new authorization next exam date

Just got off the phone with OKC, they said the letter should say October 2023 and they're sending a new letter. They said it happens a lot. If anyone else has a special issuance it wouldn't be a bad idea to check the authorization letter for contradictions.

SI consideration for new authorization next exam date

Elsewhere in the letter they say they want status reports sent in to okc before Oct 2019. I'm talking about the physical exam "A physical examination (FAA Form 8500-8) by a designated AME will be required at the frequency prescribed under the provisions of Title 14 of the CFRs, Section 61.23."...

SI consideration for new authorization next exam date

Right so the FAR they cited unambiguously says 60 months but then they interpreted it as 24. Did they cite the wrong FAR?

SI consideration for new authorization next exam date

I have a 3rd class medical issued last October with an SI not valid for any class after Oct 31st 2019. In my SI letter it says: "Consideration for new Authorization will be contingent upon the following: 1. A physical examination (FAA Form 8500-8) by a designated AME will be required at...

    Ground Instructor Ratings

Edit: wrong edition Using table 1 it looks like an applicant doesn't have to take the FOI if they take both the BGI and IGI and will be issued an AGI/IGI certificate? Or I guess they just mean buy 3 (FOI BGI IGI) and we'll give you one free (AGI)?

Airman/CFI certification in the olden days

So the story goes that my grandpa did the Civilian Pilot Training Program in the 1930s and was flying Cubs around. It's even how he met my grandma and it definitely got me interested in aviation from an early age (passed my PPL checkride 2/27). As far as anyone in the family knows he didn't do...
