    Engine out Interstate or Field

I've been thinking about this one a lot lately too, as I fly from a field in a pretty dense urban area, but with a 10-lane interstate right off the end of the main runway. The main thing that scares me about attempting to put it down on the highway is the bridges that occur every mile or so...

Piper Lance Emergency Landing in Strip Center Parking Lot -Indianapolis

I was thinking the same thing since he was so close to 465. Had to look a lot wider than the drive aisle for a strip mall parking lot and I wouldn't guess it to be too busy on a Sunday. Although the story also said he was initially considering Zionsville Road, so he may not have had the glide...

    Buying into fractional ownership

Thanks everyone for the input. Lot's of great information here. Sounds like it can be a great way to get into ownership with the right people and solid rules in place. I'm continuing to pursue this pretty seriously, but definitely going to slow down and make sure I evaluate everything carefully...

    Buying into fractional ownership

The cost isn’t 5000, that’s the time on the airframe. Cost is quite a bit more. The nice thing for me about a fractional ownership opportunity is that I’m mostly a weekday flier.

    Buying into fractional ownership

I'm considering buying a 1/5th share in an older Cessna 172 with around 5,000 hours TT on it. Just looking for some advice and/or common pitfalls from those experienced with these kinds of arrangements. As a matter of background, I'm a student pilot looking to finish up my training and do my...

    Indianapolis CFI or Training Schools

Although I don’t have any experience with them, your other options outside of KUMP would most likely be KTYQ (near Zionsville), KMQJ (just east of Indy), or KEYE (Eagle Creek - northwest side). May be helpful in case you want to try different airports or CFIs.

    Indianapolis CFI or Training Schools

Very cool. I’ll keep an eye out for you. I’m sure we’ve already crossed paths at some point. I’ve been out there 1-2 times per week since July and most recently just doing laps in the pattern to fine tune my landings.

    Indianapolis CFI or Training Schools

They’ve also recently added a 2018 Piper Archer, if low wing is your thing. Haven’t taken a ride in it yet, but looking forward to giving it a try. I’m training in the 162s and have a blast flying those.

    Indianapolis CFI or Training Schools

I do my training out of Indianapolis Metro (KUMP). Tom Wood Aviation is the FBO. I’m on the north side of Indy too, and the airport is only about 10 min drive for me, which is a huge convenience factor. I started in July and have had great experiences there so far. Nice group of people who were...

    Jabiru, Good, Bad, Ugly.

So I've been looking into buying an LSA as well and considering Jabiru among others. Through my months of research, I've come across the same rumblings regarding the engines/reliability, and that is admittedly hard to dismiss. Also heard some positive things about the newer 3300 line of...

How long did it take before you landed landing

Great video! Had to cancel my lesson today due to high winds, so I’m living vicariously through your Go Pro. Looks like you’re really getting the landings down too. Barely saw your CFI reach for the stick at all. Did he say anything about sending you solo soon?

How long did it take before you landed landing

It's very refreshing to see this thread with so many others having a similar experience. I'm 18 hours into training and the last 4 lessons have been nothing but pattern work with 10-15 landings (and a few go-arounds). I'm still having the same consistency issues that others have mentioned with...

    Staying sharp between flight lessons

Chair flying some patterns is a great idea at this point. My CFI says that all of the procedures and timing in pattern need to become second nature prior to solo (i.e. reducing power, dropping flaps, radio calls, etc) and this seems like a great way to impress them into my brain. Also ordered a...

    Staying sharp between flight lessons

I'm around 2 months and 16 flight hours into my training and I've settled into a rhythm of 1-2 flights per week depending on schedule and weather. Starting to see nice progress and getting very close to solo time. I've also been spending around an hour per day in the evenings studying material...

Cessna 162 Comparables? Useful Load? LSA now or later?

Totally agree with your analysis. The 162 is quite difficult to land consistently on centerline and pretty squirrely on takeoff with any gusts as well. Taxing with the castering nose wheel takes some practice too. I have about 15 hours in the 162 and 5 in the 172 and my landings have been...

Cessna 162 Comparables? Useful Load? LSA now or later?

I guess I'm just into the technology. I like having as much information available as possible. My experience is limited, but I find the dual screen seems to improve my situational awareness on the short cross countries compared to the flights I've done in 172s with steam gauges. I'm fine with...

Cessna 162 Comparables? Useful Load? LSA now or later?

I’m doing my PPL training in a Skycatcher and really enjoy it. It’s a lot of fun to fly once you get the hang of it, the only downsides being the wind sensitivity and the weight limits. You also can’t beat the rental price compared to the 172. I’m also planning to buy a plane after I finish my...

    Pace of Training

I’m considering a couple periods of accelerated training as well. Would love to hear how that works out and what you considered the pros and cons of the fast pace schedule.

    Pace of Training

This is a good point. Part of this could be that I was very timid about taking the controls at first. I'll talk with him before my next lesson to make sure we're keeping things moving along. I feel like I'm looking at a full 15 hours before solo, and that's fine. I'm really excited to be...

    Pace of Training

Thanks Denver. This is good info. I’m definitely gonna give some accelerated training a try to see how it works for me.
