Aspen firmware 2.12 unlocks Altitude select for TruTrak / Aerocruze 100

What a joke. So glad I didn’t bite when they were hawking their “fully integrated system” together at OshKosh in 2018 - went with TruTrak and dual G5s instead and got instant heading and altitude select at no extra cost. I get that things take time to work through but to charge another $1k when...

Garmin G5 Driving an Aerocruze 100 (TruTrak)

As Jesse says, yes it will. Although you will need to add a toggle switch to tell the AP whether to take input from the G5s or GPS.

    Yoke Buttons

Flip/flop is a very nice feature - you’ll use it at least 10x more than a remote ident button

No GPS Instrument Checkride in 2021?

You are correct - I misspoke. My GPS is tied into G5s leaving the Nav indicator the only old school "needles", but realize a lot of GPS are not tied into glass and have their own needles.

No GPS Instrument Checkride in 2021?

Good work. I agree with what some others have said that you have a better IFR foundation learning without GPS. Without GPS you have to get comfortable flying in the soup without following the line on a screen - that is a good skill to have. I did the same for instrument training - installed a...

    Notification on GNC355?

Did this randomly happen or has it done this since initial install? For the heading issue check the install manual to be sure the output settings on your G5 and input settings on your GNC 355 are correct. I believe the G5 sends GMU 11 heading info to the GAD 29 via the CANBUS, and the GAD 29...

    Thoughts on DME?

I’m in the same panel upgrade process and went through the same questioning. Ultimately I decided that keeping the Aera 660 panel mounted to augment the GNC355 would be far more useful than keeping the KN64, and there is not enough room in the stack for everything so the DME has to go. I like...

    GTX 345 Failure

Thanks. Haven’t seen that one - mine gives the occasional “no 1090ES” but never seen a total fail message

    GTX 345 Failure

To be clear, when you guys say your unit “failed” is there an actual failure notice or is it just giving you the “no 1090es” message periodically?

How good or bad were you in early instrument training?

When you’re getting an IR as a personal goal rather than a career path it just takes lots of patience and persistence. I spent about a year and probably 65 hours getting mine. It gave us lots of actual IMC time, which I think made me a more proficient IFR pilot. The 40 hours requirement can...

    Aerocruze 100 G5 Mode

Yes, flip the switch to G5 mode until the “E” shows us, give it a few seconds to sync with your G5 and it will have current baro. Then flip back over to GPS. That’s what I do.

    Trutrak, ILS and GPSS

According to the TruTrak manual it flies coupled approaches (the placard limits it to 700’ AGL). See attached...

    Autopilot comparison chart

There seems to be a lot of misinformation here about the TruTrak Vizion with regard to approach and heading capabilities. It will take a heading from a G5 or an Aspen. It also flies LPV approaches with a 700’ AGL limitation. From the manual...

    Opinions on planned avionics upgrades/changes

    Good to know, thank you!

    Trutrak, ILS and GPSS

The simple answer (and maybe correct, maybe not) is no. That’s what my instructor and I agreed on during instrument training - under instrument rules we did not use the VFR GPS to drive an autopilot that is actively manipulating the controls. However as with many laws and rules/regs, you really...

    Trutrak, ILS and GPSS

Seems possible. I can set my Aera 660, which is tied to my G5s and TT, direct to a VOR (or LOC), center the OBS needle and it simulates tracking the VOR and keeps the magenta line centered. Legality in IMC is another question, but it does work.

    Opinions on planned avionics upgrades/changes

Yes G5s are already installed. A GNC255 would be tied into the G5s. Sticking with the Narco I would keep the existing indicator. Drawing approaches and holds is what I was looking for. If there are real functional benefits then I will probably keep the 660, but if it's just another shiny...

    Opinions on planned avionics upgrades/changes

I recently finished my instrument rating and I am looking to upgrade the avionics on my Cessna Cardinal to make it more IFR capable and generally updated. I am fairly fixed on sticking with Garmin so it all ties into my G5s. Looking for some opinions on the below planned changes: Currently...

    G5/GNC 255/TruTrak integration question

$7k for parts. I can’t install a GFC 500 with my A&P friend. It costs nearly twice that out the door after install and tax.

    G5/GNC 255/TruTrak integration question

That's how I have it set up right now, tracks both GPS and heading bug. As you mentioned above though, could roughly track a VOR by adjusting as you go, but will not automatically hold the line. Oh well, for a $5k autopilot there are going to be some small sacrifices.
