How acceptable is it to plan, and pick up your IFR flight plan @ a fix or waypoint rather than the departure airport?

@ what point do you question taking a flight, if you as the pilot have concerns a passenger could cause a disruption or diversion during the flight? And not talking drunk, high or the like. Just someone who's comfort level w/flying is very low. And no, I do not want to have to hurt them to stay...

Bought the plane and only flew it for a couple weeks before it went into annual, which took 8 weeks due the prop AD/overhaul. Got it back last weekend, and while flying this weekend, happened to check the panel clock, which worked... :)...
