    Flight over Lake Michigan?

I can attest to the class bravo around Chicago being less than welcoming. On the way back I flew into the mode C ring, but was explicitly told not to enter the bravo. I hadn't planned to anyway, so I didn't really care. Flying through the rain wasn't really very nerve-racking in the sense...

    Flight over Lake Michigan?

The flight's over! I went around the lake to the south, being careful to stay south of the Chicago Bravo. I got flight following both ways, but I noticed one very annoying thing about them - sometimes they didn't pass me off to the next station. On the flight back I had to ask the next...

    Flight over Lake Michigan?

We went out and bought a GPS - a Garmin nuvi 200, which is a car GPS, but it was on sale for about $100 off. We took it up in the Cherokee yesterday for a flight around Cedar Rapids and it seemed to do quite well. It has an offroad mode so it doesn't do too bad at putting you on nearby...

    Flight over Lake Michigan?

true...I might conseder renting one. I'm going on a short x-country this weekend. The plan is to buy a decent car or hiking GPS and see how it works in the plane. If it turns out to be a poor judge of position, I'll probably rent/borrow/beg.

    Flight over Lake Michigan?

The purpose of the GPS is just to serve as a backup for now, then later (when I get a full time job and actually have money) I'll get a good aviation one. Much better, Nick. Besides, if I were to pick a muppet, Fozzie bear would be far from the top of my list. I'm more of a Beaker kind of...

    Flight over Lake Michigan?

Yeah. I'm just VFR, I ment I could fly on the instruments if it were still legal VFR wx. Rash?? I don't know. I saw your profile picture - you're a little furry for my liking :-)

    Flight over Lake Michigan?

I'm torn. If I go over, the plane probably won't die and I'll be just fine. I'll save $150 and about an hour and a half round-trip. But it's kind-of a battle between my logic which says go for it, and my gut instinct that says go around. I'm pretty sure I'll be making this flight a lot, but...

    Flight over Lake Michigan?

ha ha - touche. I just googled overwater operations and it took me right to that. Didn't think to look at the subpart :-) Given the overwhelming advice for going around - I think I'll do that. 40 degrees is pretty cold! Thanks!

    Flight over Lake Michigan?

Hey, I just got my PPL, and I'm planning a flight from Cedar Rapids, IA to Mancelona, MI here in a couple of weeks in a Piper Cherokee 180. I'm debating whether I should fly over the lake or just to go down south around Chicago. If I were to fly up north across the lake, I would take the...

    Great flight today

I need to start gliding. Maybe that'll be next semester if I can come up with the money. Sounds like you had a nice long flight - lucky you for finding a road with little enough traffic to land.

Heh, I don't know if you want to hear all that...I started off strong by taking off on the wrong runway :-). My check ride was at MCW, and if you look at the diagram, the 30 and 36 runways are coincident and can be a bit confusing to newcomers...even if their instructors did tell them 5 times...

Oh, I just looked at the Gaston's website (wow, it looks nice!) If I've got the money come June (I hope so!), then I'll be there :-)

Totally true about the narrow runways. I'm looking forward to going back to Greencastle this summer and getting a lot of practice on my landings. Oooh, and that grass strip. I don't know why, but I still prefer grass landings over landings on pavement. I guess it's because my first 11 hours...

Thanks for all the congrats, guys! It feels great to finally have my PPL. Now once I get the money I'll start working towards my instrument and beyond... Yeah, the winds on Friday were pretty gusty, but I managed to keep it on the runway (barely on the last one thanks to pulling out the...
