A SIMPLE Question about SI’s, SSRIs, and BasicMed

Not so fast… - I asked the FAA medical certification office this question, and they said "I think so, but we're not supposed to talk about, you need to talk to the 'BasicMed folks' since it was an act of Congress". - Then I read the 12 page Basic Med FAQs...

A SIMPLE Question about SI’s, SSRIs, and BasicMed

I’ve read thousands of words about it and still don’t know the yes-or-no answer to this: I have taken Zoloft for many years, have been on an SI for it for a few years, and my doctor asserts that I am am stable and symptom-free. Can I get BasicMed?

DaviatorSF and 7ZSTTto2… how'd your jobs at JLC avionics go?

OK, that's what my HIMS AME said too. Thanks for helping to clarify.

    SSRI Questions

From my HIMS AME. Right, I understand that you can't get Basic Med in those severe cases (I think that's what you meant). Here's the case I'm trying to clarify: A pilot whose depression has *not* been deemed severe, per your description, decides — in consultation with his psychiatrist — to...

    SSRI Questions

So are you saying that that one could, depending on circumstances and the whims of the FAA, go from an SSRI SI to a normal 3rd class medical certificate? I'm not considering that path at the moment (i.e. I'm not discontinuing my SSRI), but I'd like to be clear on what's possible and what's not.

Again, I believe that being off for 6 months would qualify you switch from SI to Basic Med, not a regular 3rd class. Of course, you should confirm this with your HIMS AME &/or FAA.

    SSRI Questions

Oops, I forgot to say that this only works if you want to switch to BasicMed.

    GTN 650, CDI, and Direct-To

Got it, that's what I was looking for (and theorizing). Yep, I've been doing that. The only thing it doesn't do is show an external CDI. Someone mentioned that it should show the same as the GTN's 'CDI' display. I'll check that out in the plane this weekend. Thanks all for the help!

OMG… would you please read my posts carefully before replying? Thank you.

    SSRI Questions

I've been on the SI/HIMS path for a couple of years now. It's a pain in the butt: finding a psychiatrist and a HIMS AME, then seeing (and paying) them every 6 months, plus a CogScreen every two years. I wonder if it would be simpler if you didn't get a special issuance in the first place. You...

    GTN 650, CDI, and Direct-To

I'm hoping Walt's trick works — i.e. don't choose your direct-to waypoint from the flight plan.

    GTN 650, CDI, and Direct-To

OK, obviously I need to go try this again and confirm the behavior.

    GTN 650, CDI, and Direct-To

Again, I'm not asking how to do direct-to; I know how to do it. The question is what the connected CDI does when I do it. My theory is that when there's an active flight plan, the CDI will show where I am with respect to the path between two published waypoints — the last and the next ones in...

    GTN 650, CDI, and Direct-To

New theory (until I get a chance to go to the plane): If I have a flight plan active, the CDI is always going to reflect the route between the previous and next waypoints regardless of where I am when I hit direct-to. In other words, if my flight plan shows a route from A->B, with B as the next...

    GTN 650, CDI, and Direct-To

OK, I know how to do direct-to for waypoints in the flight plan, and ones that aren't — on the GTN, you hit Direct-to (physical button), select a waypoint, then hit D->Activate (on-screen) But you're saying that once I've done that, then I do it again with the direct-to waypoint I just set, and...

    GTN 650, CDI, and Direct-To

I have a GTN 650 connected to a Garmin GI-106A CDI. Let's say I want the CDI to track the course from my present position to some waypoint. Hitting Direct-To for that waypoint doesn't work; the CDI reflects the track to that waypoint from the previous waypoint, not my present position. The...

First time 3rd Class Medical deferred to OKC

Amazing… I was just reading posts here to see what I could do to speed up my special issuance review, when the phone rang: Hi, it's the FAA, your certificate's been approved! Yee haw! 6 weeks with the FAA, 4+ months start to finish. One piece of advice (repeating what's been said here...
