Dallas area pilots - Check your planes

Those flight school planes were all tied down with sturdy straps. They were most all ripped apart. It goes to show that not much protects planes when a gust front comes through at over 100 mph, which is what the airport manager confirmed to me this morning. Probably 40 or more hangers have a...

    Flight School Reviews in DFW

Franco, welcome! My plane is based at GPM (been there 11 years), and it is a wonderful place to base out of for flying. While I've not flown with Aviator, I've heard good things about them. If you want to chat sometime, I'd love to help welcome you to the aviation community, and give you a...

Tell us your best courtesy car story!

You may have gotten lucky there. Last time I was in Midland, that ratty car had a drivers door that would barely close, highly faulty speedometer, non-working fuel gauge, and every warning light in the panel was on. They were proud of it though! Could only have it for an hour. Best crew car...

Can I ask anyone who has completed the Garmin upgrades how they like it?

FS-210 was in my plane when I bought it. Really neat option. It's (for me) a lot easier to load up a flight plan on FF, then just bluetooth it to the 430, than do all the knob twisting necessary to do the same thing on the 430.

    GFC 500 first impressions

Very similar setup to what I have in my Tiger. Dual G5's, GFC500, 430W, and no automatic trim control (not an option for a Grumman). I have never flown with an auto-pilot before, so I really didn't have an expectation, other than that it would be amazing, and the setup didn't fail to deliver...

    Irving Texas area

[@Mitch817[/USER] has a Tiger based there and can answer questions. Actually, the Tiger belongs to me, but Mitch also flies her.

    Grumman for flight training

Answering for Mitch because we fly the same airplane. The Tiger has the dual G5's, a 430W, and the Garmin GFC500 autopilot that together qualify it for a TAA. They are responsive and a load of fun to fly, but it's best to find an instructor who knows them well enough to really teach the...

Grumman Tiger, good bad and ugly

There is a bit of difference in power between the 150 hp, and the 160 high-compression engines on a Traveler, but most of that demonstrates itself in climb phase. A fully loaded 150 hp Traveler on a hot Texas summer day climbs pathetically initially. That being said, I've been all over the...

Have any of y'all done this? Anyone found any surprises?

I did the 23andMe one. The general results were not a surprise, mostly Scandinavian and and Brit/Irish (those darn Vikings). What was surprising is..I found my biological family after being adopted at birth nearly 60 years earlier. Genetics is an amazing science.

Grumman Tiger, good bad and ugly

Current Tiger owner, also own a Traveler., and did my PPL in a Cheetah. Wouldn't even consider buying any other brand of plane.

How much airplane can you get for $1,000 monthly budget?

Glad to help devalue your net worth on an honorable airplane. We need to go fly in the Tiger at some point.

How much airplane can you get for $1,000 monthly budget?

Late to this conversation, but I bought my AA-5 10 years ago mostly due to the price points between it and the Cheetah. I flew a Cheetah in my primary training, and the differences between the two are almost not worth discussing, they are that small. That being said, neither is a good climber...

Things on my plane that are currently broken.

I'd agree with that. Vibration can really do some damage. Have them check your engine mounts at the annual, too. Also might want to look into a dynamic prop balance, if if looks like you're really getting a lot of vibration up front. Small things that make a big difference.

Plan down. And no flight plan filed

I know the pilot. He's been flying Grummans a very long time. The lure of turning back to the airport after a takeoff engine failure is immensely strong. I've lost more than one pilot friend that way.

GFC 500 installed in 182Q and it is fantastic!

Thanks for that pirep! I'm in the conga line for the GFC 500, can't wait!!

KY to CA in an Archer II... how insane am I?

Looked good until you said Roswell. FBO folk are nice, but once you leave the airport, you will be seriously disappointed. Find somewhere else to spend the night (Ruidoso just to the west comes to mind), and, as has been mentioned, spend your free time in places much more interesting out...

    Starter just goes "kachunk"

Bryan (with a Y)...won't help with your battery/starter issue, but get the split nose-cowl conversion done. It makes your life so much easier in so many ways.

    Tiger maintenance

9000 hrs? Thats 350 hrs/year. Almost an hour every day. Flight school plane, I'm guessing. And yes, main spar life is 12,500 hrs. And main spars with documented hours for a Grumman are pretty much unobtanium. I'd move on to another plane candidate.
