Plane Crash on I-55 Lincoln Illinois 3/3/20

I used to rent from the pilot killed in the crash, actually he did my last BFR too. Very sad news

    BasicMed Course Expiration

Good morning! I wanted to double check because this information is hard to find, if I let my Basic Med online course (take every 2 years) expire because I haven't been flying lately, all I have to do is retake the course and I am current again? There is no penalty for letting it expire?

    Basic Med 101

I did the same thing. The doctor had no problem doing the exam and signing, but he was wondering why there were 0 parameters for things like eyesight, hearing, etc. If you look at the exam, there is no PASS/FAIL or anything like that...just a box that says EXAMINED. The doctor said he didn't see...

    Upcoming Piper Announcement @ SnF

It was funny at Oshkosh to watch your average Joe look at the Piper Archer on display...looks nice, nothing too special, same basic design for decades. Then they would ask about pricing and find out it was $350K+ I saw that look on their face many times, I think people expect it to cost a...

Basic Med has a lot of questions...

Exactly my point...it is the first part of the IMSAFE checklist. No certificate out there can replace that judgement.

Basic Med has a lot of questions...

I used to think like that too until I realized BasicMed is the FAA washing their hands of the medical process. Look at the checklist you are giving to your doctor, there are no specifications or PASS/FAIL...it just says you were examined. They are saying its your judgement about your health to...

Class III or BasicMed: Which would you choose?

Right, and he is probably a bit cautious of the FAA getting involved if there is ever an incident. Who can blame him? The checklist has no middle ground, its either sign or don't sign. There is no "Yes, but..." I never understood why flying and medicals is so tightly regulated for GA. If you...

Class III or BasicMed: Which would you choose?

I went through Basic Med, but it was annoying to explain to the doctor what exactly he is looking for. There are no parameters to anything, just the most simple of checklists that says EXAMINED. I know that it is sort of the point, but no wonder some doctors won't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

The closer I get to checkride, the further it feels

Hey, we are in the same area relatively (I'm in Central IL). I did my flight training at 3MY. An airport close to your location with great reviews would be Blue Skies Flying Services at 3CK. I have never been to them personally but they received the 2017 AOPA Best Midwest Flight School. Jim...

    Going BasicMed

I think that is the FAA's specialty when it comes to medicals...all conditions fit in tidy little boxes. You have "this disease" and that means "this". Now prove to us that you are fit to fly and please do so in this amount of time. Thank goodness we are allowed to have our doctors make those...

The Icon A5 is starting to attract buyers

I don't know what genius thought up of that, but after the negative press they amended their purchasing contract. I just mean that when you watch the videos the plane looks like a joy to fly. Its sleek, has a neat cockpit design, and awesome visibility. I am usually in Florida once a year, I...

The Icon A5 is starting to attract buyers

Kudos to Icon for doing something new and refreshing...I think LSA designs are really improving aviation as a whole.

Building an airplane for less than $6500

I had the honor at Oshkosh this year to see the expression on people's faces (assuming they weren't pilots) when they asked the price on the Piper Archer on display. Not a bad looking plane by any means, but it certainly didn't look like $300k worth of parts.

    Aviation Headset Question

Give them a call at 888-541-7223. The man I talked to was extremely friendly and it seems like they stand by their products. They sent me a replacement microphone (a better one even then the headset had originally) right away.

    Aviation Headset Question

I called Rugged Air and they are sending a new and improved microphone for the unit. I did not know the headset had a 7 year warranty, that is very impressive! I am just hoping he is right that the problem would indeed be in the microphone and not a wiring glitch or anything.

    Aviation Headset Question

I did not know that was an option. I am going to take off the mic protector and take a good look at it tonight. Maybe I will find some way to adjust mic sensitivity.

    Aviation Headset Question

Thanks for the replies, I'll take a look at it tonight. I know that it is not the radio settings because the headset does it anywhere. Also, other headsets plugged into the same jack work fine. I am flying on Saturday and I'll take it up on the pattern and see if it is still malfunctioning. I...

    Aviation Headset Question

I purchased a Rugged RA200 headset last February for passengers and it is giving me trouble. Before I turn it in for warranty I want to make sure I am doing everything right. I have tried this in different airplanes in different positions and same issue. Everything is fine on the ground, but...

Best aircraft to fly 4 up with baggage to Bermuda

What ratings does this guy have? The AOPA has an article on it, however they even warn that piston aircraft rarely attempt this. https://www.aopa.org/go-fly/destinations/international-travel/bermuda

    DUI reporting question

I know everybody makes mistakes, I just have a hard time believing an airline pilot would be this careless. Decisions like the ones he made could destroy his whole career, everything he worked for.
