Did I mention I LOVE flying???

I finished the annual on the RV-9A, so this morning I thought I'd treat myself to a favorite breakfast run, from Cable to Hemet-Ryan. Bambi's Hangar One Cafe is exceptional...I highly recommend it. So there I was at about 4500', into my descent toward Hemet, when I pick up some traffic on the...

    2016 Miata, exploded view

Man, it takes a ton of disassembly to get the diff out...it's totally caged in by the subframe. I swapped out the open diff for a limited slip unit last week. Luckily, no suspension realignment necessary as the adjustment happens where the links meet the subframe, and I didn't need to loosen...

    Rough idle

Lately, my IO-320-D1A has been idling very roughly, and I'm taxiing at least 500 rpm higher than normal to keep the engine running somewhat smoother. Mag check at run-up is fine, with my standard 60-rpm drop (from 1800 rpm) on each side. I took out the plugs, cleaned and gapped them (although...

    Crash at CCB (Upland, CA)

6265107 Yeeesh. Landed super long (or possibly an aborted takeoff?), bounced hard; then it looks like he attempted to go around, and cartwheeled well past end of the runway. Pilot looks to be OK. Crazy that there's news chopper aerial footage of crash. Maybe there was an emergency call prior...

Thought about a Lotus...and bought one!

Lots of car guys on the board here, so just wanted to share. Since my 23xx-lb. ND Miata was feeling a little porky, I just took possession of a 2005 Lotus Elise, at just a hair under a ton. Pretty neat little ride. For those unfamiliar with it, the Elise has an aluminum tub chassis made of...

    BD-5 jet crash, Camarillo

Unfortunately, the pilot did not survive. On a lunch run to Hemet, I saw a similar plane doing low approaches over the runway...might be the same one. https://abc7.com/1-killed-in-small-plane-crash-near-camarillo-airport/5603392/

    What are the odds...

So sad...maintenance worker killed at John Wayne (KSNA) when a tire supporting the jetway exploded: worker-killed-by-exploding-tire-at-john-wayne-airport

    Thud Pilots, on Amazon Video

Really worth a look! Chronicles the F-105 in Viet Nam. Impressive that a single seat, single engine jet could carry a heavier bomb load than a B-17! Really gripping stories from pilots about their missions, rescues and POW experiences. The bit about the Wild Weasels insignia is hilarious. :D

    Penny Marshall, RIP

What a great lady. Makes me want to watch Big again. I like Jake Tapper's tribute when he said, "Today, there is crying in baseball."

    uAvionix EchoUAT/SkyFYX GPS...nice and compact!

I didn't realize how small the components were until I actually held them in my hand. Pretty cool. Waiting on a harness that will allow me to hard-wire the transponder instead of the unit "sniffing" data from the electrical harness. Small size really opens up lots of mounting possibilities.

    How long to solo?

It opens this Friday! Love the Star Wars films. :D

    Favorite lightweight tents

So, this year for Oshkosh, I'm gonna camp right by my airplane. Could be great, could be miserable depending on the weather, but I want to get the full experience. I'm thinking a nice cushy air mattress would be good too, especially in the event of heavy rain, to keep me up off the grass a bit...

    Fun approach!

I flew to Northrop/Hawthorne a few days ago, coming from the south on a left base entry to Runway 25. The interesting thing is that they have you follow the 110 freeway at or above 1500' (!) before turning final. My friend who is training out of Long Beach says it's to avoid conflicts with...

    Cheap 100LL at Cable!

Just a heads up to pilots in SoCal...100LL will be $3.80/gal. for the month of December from the self-serve pumps at Cable (CCB). Come on by! Maniac Mike's is a great restaurant on the field. Park right in front, and you're usually in the shadow of our resident DC-3. These transient spots are on...

    MOAs out West

I'm looking to fly from SoCal to Mammoth on Thursday, so after skirting the restricted airspace of Edwards AFB and China Lake, it looks like I'll be taking a tour through MOAs Isabella, Owens and Bishop. Any pointers/stories from those who have done this before? Are the Joshua controllers...

    Osh logistics question

So, I'm flying in on Sunday the 23rd. My question is about event tickets/admission. Do I buy these beforehand, or do I land, get ushered to my parking spot in HBP, then walk to the front gate to get the pass/wristband/hand stamp or whatever?

    Rituals

Before I leave the hangar after a flight, I have to align all the control surfaces to neutral so the aircraft "looks right." And then check that the master switch is off, about three times. :D Just curious what other quirky things other pilots do.

    Air-to-air frequency for private field?

Sunday's plans are to go visit Chuckwalla Raceway and visit some friends doing a track day there, and conveniently, Chuckwalla purchased the old military airstrip right next to the track (Desert Center on the sectional, east of Palm Springs). There's no CTAF...would you try to hail other pilots...
