NPS attempting to close airstrip at Stovepipe Wells

Was just there. Loved the flight though tricky a couple points. December is the right time to go in terms of wether at L09. I linked some pics. Log book looks pretty active (or more then i thought it would be). I'd say runway was good. Couple bumps and tiny tumble weeds but was fine. Such an...

    KSMO TO KONT QUESTION

Thanks all. Love the enthusiasm. And yes, SkyDog58... this is never my first stop. It's always a flight plan first, AFD, Sectional, and all the weather services avail. As someone said before... this is more like a pirep. Just good to hear what other pilots say. ATC never had to yell at me (and i...

    KSMO TO KONT QUESTION

Thanks all. The flight was great. FF and ATC were not a concern at all. Since i'm VFR it was clouds / ceiling and mod chop. But it all worked out fine. KONT was very polite and helpful. I had 26L to myself coming and going. I appreciate all the great advice. It really set me at ease (yes... low...

    KSMO TO KONT QUESTION

Thanks AdamZ! Yep, new. Got PPL in December '15. While I've flown many of these routes in practice, I haven't as PIC. I'd never ask anyone to flight plan for me. Always looking for insight. But I trust my training very much. I do appreciate your perspective and thanks for taking the time to...

    KSMO TO KONT QUESTION

100% to what you are all saying. I'd always refer to the a/fd and always have a taxi diagram ready. And yes, technically its simple: do what ATC says (so long as you feel safe to comply... which should be 100% of the time). I guess for a much newer pilot like myself i love getting "insight" from...

    KSMO TO KONT QUESTION

Thanks all! And it's exactly as Shawn was saying... just trying to get the inside scoop. I appreciate the pilot community and how we all help one another. Info like MAYBE i'll be told to stay north of the 10 and POSSIBLY told to cross midfield for left downwind traffic is always helpful. I...

    KSMO TO KONT QUESTION

Thanks coma24. wow KA550. That's just mean. i never asked anyone to flight plan for me. Read my post very carefully. I asked for any advice about what to expect. i already gave my altitude. clearly i have a plan in place already. May i make a suggestion, if you don't want to help someone...

    KSMO TO KONT QUESTION

Hi all. You guys gave me so much great advice before my flight to KSNA that i wanted to ask about this flight. I'm going KSMO to KONT. Using flight following. Curious if there's anything i should know about landing a PA28 Piper Cherokee there. Planning on flying most of the flight at 3500 and...

    KSMO to KSNA

Shawn, i've done the LAX transition a lot since i trained out of Santa Monica. I know both Special Flight Rules and The Mini Route. For this trip i did the Mini Route. For spacing LAX had me drop to 2000. But after LAX I remained at 2500 the entire trip. Including the return trip. I even had a...

    KSMO to KSNA

I did the flight! It was fantastic and all the advise was VERY NECESSARY!!! And "register@..." you were right. Originally inbound they gave me 20R and then switched it, had me cross over the tower to join the downwind for 20L. It was BUSY, to say the least. First the tower extended my downwind...

    KSMO to KSNA

That's super helpful. I was reading the AFD and was like "15 degrees... hmmm" but you helped make it make sense. So if they give me 20L then as you cross midfield your descending to that new pattern (i'll check AFD again)?? I get that it's not a complicated route but an abundance of caution...

    KSMO to KSNA

So much help. Very appreciated. I always have the TAC and Sectional. i've flown the mini route many a time but only south bound as a student. Instructors always take me up to 4500 on the north bound with SFRA. Then we chop and drop to get to pattern for KSMO. So i wasn't sure about taking the...

    KSMO to KSNA

Thanks Luvflyin and Stratobee for the input. I figured if i was on flight following they'd clear me through the air spaces. I thought i watched a youtube video where someone did that (smo to sna at 2500). But i'd never trust a youtube video! I also could probably just go to 4500 and use FF. As i...
