Yeah, I've been an IT for 16 years and spent 12 of those in the military. RTFMing (R'ingTFM?) only goes so far if you're not practicing for many subjects ;) I was die hard on the book the first few days but then realize I'd reached the point of diminishing returns until I get myself in the air!

Just booked my discovery flight for 09APR16, picking up two sets of aviation headsets on Wednesday. Been working through FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook...but there is a point in the book there early on where it's in one ear and other the other until you're up in the air.

Lol. When I get made in Boulder I just tear my clothes up some and start beating on the nearest bucket with my eyes rolled back. Resort to spoken word if the Bernie-ites keep talking to you ;)

Agreed on both. I'm looking at a couple grand a month on lessons the next few months (including instruction and rentals). I make strong income, but also keep most of it for pursuits like this. I drive a paid-off Ford Ranger approaching 230K miles, and I stick with my "old" and reliable phone...

This is good stuff! I'm also in a high-paid IT job trying to balance "responsible" income with the desire to trek into Costa Rica or hop around the country. Thanks for the updates!
