    Can't Fly, I'm Bored - Photo Time

Nice photos Jack - I like that you led off with the 140 at Ft Parker. 11 pictures, 10 are of taildraggers and one is a seaplane - how does that fit ? Fly-in season is coming up - see you around, soon.

How high have you flown in a low HP plane.

1.38 : 13.8K in 100hp Cessna C150 with portable ox - took a long time to get there was on Flight Following 45 miles from destination airport. ATC called up and told me they were NOT going to clear me into the Bravo and to please quit goofing around up there - I was trying for 14K, but...

    steam v TV

I'd really like to have seven individual, round, electronic color-LCD screens that fit right into my existing panel holes, all driven by a central processor with AHRS and all that. Seems like a great combination to me, and maybe not too terribly difficult to build. With two processors...

Seriously ? What can a bassoon do that an accordion can't ?

Wife wants me to get IR, but I'm not so sure

http://www.swaviator.com/html/issueSO02/Hangar91002.html The thread began with the OP stating his reservations about maintaining currency and proficiency, so he may not be in a position to exercise the advantages of the rating without some attendant additional risks. However, the article...

Wife wants me to get IR, but I'm not so sure

Sorry, Glider Dude, I have no references which will bear scrutiny - I should have said "some of the many stats I have seen bandied about on this interweb, by persons purporting to have done actual research, suggest, to ME, that entering IMC may have some associated risks which do not ordinarily...

How high have you flown non pressurized plane

12,500 in both the C150 and Bonanza. OX is on my wish list, right along with AOA and GPSS .... but I keep spending all my money on avgas

Wife wants me to get IR, but I'm not so sure

My earliest posts to this thread predate my checkride for the IR by a few days .... I was pretty far along, and deeply invested in the training process when I made my initial comments . Since then, I've passed the CR ( 2-10-2016 ) been annointed and made a few flights on IFR flight plans...

    GTN for Dummies ?

I have the Garmin app, but it doesn't really help with application scenarios. I have learned way more from the FSX GTN simulator by just exploring all the buttons and menus. Just left http://avionicswest.com/ which has some excellent articles posted - a sufficiently convincing sample to induce...

Wife wants me to get IR, but I'm not so sure

for retailguy - sorry I offended you with my "cheap shot" as it happens, I do possess the IR, which doesn't somehow make me a "better" pilot - it just makes me a pilot with an additional set of skills and responsibilities.

    GTN for Dummies ?

I keep my GTN manual next to the bed for reading myself to sleep - works pretty good for that, and I glean little bits of information which seep into my long-term memory while I sleep. My FSX sim includes the GTN 750 add-on, and that has helped me discover all sorts of useful stuff as well...

Wife wants me to get IR, but I'm not so sure

We need to get the implied value judgement out of these discussions - really, does the word better have any relevance here ? I'be got a friend that does aerobatics and can spot-land his taildragger biplane on a dime in a cow pasture but thinks San Antonio to Waco is an epic cross country and...

Wife wants me to get IR, but I'm not so sure

An IR will not make you a "better pilot" - that's just what the IR guys say to validate their choice to pursue it. What IS true is that 40 hours of task-targeted instructor guided training will make you a better pilot. Why not develop your own program to be a superior VFR pilot ? That...

Is an airplane a good investment?

The delta between rental and ownership costs diminishes with increasing hours, until at some point it becomes cheaper to own. That, plus the greater convenience of ownership make a compelling case IF you are going to cross that threshold. My Cessna 150 has cost me approx $60/HR wet, all in...

    Company GA Policy

When I asked my supervisors about flying myself up to WY for a work assignment, their first response was , "Damn Chuck, if we let you do it, then everybody will want to" - which is hilarious since I'm the only pilot in the organization. We settled on a routine auto-mileage reimbursement based...

    Should I fire my CFII?

To the OP : I've flown with 11 CFIs - two were jerks. Another one had nothing useful to teach me but I needed their endorsement to rent a plane. So my experience is that 73% of the CFIs I've had contact with were competent, personable and effective instructors. I suggest you find somebody...

Why dont ppl carry helmets with them for emergency's?

I mostly wear short pants, T-shirt and Redwing boots - 'cause there's snakes down there, and I might have to walk out of a cow pasture someday

I'm recanting my previous position and now advising you to go all-in. You are in a position to either fly a lot of hours in whatever you can own and support, or work your way into a position to fly OP's airplanes, which leads to all kinds of interesting possibilities. For instance, I'll...

If you are making six figures and already have a PPL, just buy an IFR capable complex, HP plane ( Bonanza ) and fly the hell out of it till you get a thousand hours - IR and Commercial shouldn't be too tough, and adding an MEL ought to be fairly easy. Then you can go off to school, finish up...
