FAA Tells Pilots To Go Analogue As GNSS ‘Spoofing’ Incidents Increase

The FAA has to get a few convictions under there belt. Anyone doing this is also telegraphing their location. Given this activity has the potential to kill hundreds of people, a sentence of a few decades in jail would be a strong deterrence for wannabe spoofers. Also, a network of receivers...

    Graphical Area Forecast

I tried over many weeks. I use an android tablet with Chrome. Perhaps they needed to tweak something. My favorite weather product to help decide on going on top or not.

Still functional a day later. Safe to say that it is fixed.

    Graphical Area Forecast

It magically started working today at some point after I posted this. I swear I looked for weeks for it. Thank you National Weather Service!

That's where I go. But no numbers.

    Graphical Area Forecast

I'm liking the new aviationweather.gov with one exception. I used to be able to get the "graphical area forecast" (GFA) and now I can't find it. I believe it was the only weather product that would give you the forecast bottom of the clouds AND the tops. It used to give me the numbers repeated...

Operating in Class D without clearance

I'm based in Bridgeport CT and a lot of the Long Island flight schools practice touch and goes at my home drome. The rare occassions that I have been told to remain outside the class D, the controller gave me a time in which to call back. Something like "call me back in 10 minutes" in which...

Lawsuits Filed in Deadly Seaplane Accident Near Seattle

Have to wonder if had undergone any maintenance. Perhaps it was not reassembled correctly? If not, and this is from the factory, it is going to cost the manufacturer. And probably rightfully so. No?

Unfortunate plane crash: Wagner boss Prigozhin reported killed in crash

It's a Darwin award really. The guy should have known better. Once he publicly embarassed his boss, it was over. He fell for the old "yeah, I will give in to your demands and forgive you" trick.

    Gilligan's Island & Meowing

I once read an article that the FAA was going to "crack down" on this. I guess by triangulating on the offending transmitter? But never heard if they actually "caught" anyone.

    Gilligan's Island & Meowing

I believe most airline pilots are required to monitor the guard freq while in flight. Out of boredom, they either "meow" or say "guuuuuuuuaaaaaaard" randomly. I hear it on almost every flight. I'm not going to lie. I get a laugh out of it.

    Jim Tweto 1954-2023

So tragic. I watched every episode. Fatal accident... (16/June/2023) - United States of America : On June 16, 2023, at about 1148 local time, a privately-registered Cessna 180H Skywagon, N91361, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Unalakleet, Alaska. The airline transport...

    Something going on around DC

The pilot owned a Piper PA32 (T-tail Lance) and was on the PA32 Facebook page. He was a retired airline pilot. He participated a lot in the discussions and had commented on many of my posts on the PA32 FB page. He participated in the discussions and wasn't just a "lurker". Super nice guy. So tragic.

    Flight Cancelled

During COVID, pilots of a certain airline staged a "sick out" to protest the shot mandates. The airline claimed the mass cancellations were "due to weather". That is their standard "go to" to avoid the financial hit.

    Hershey bar wings and landing

For me, I don't worry about the speed so much. I just do the recommended short approach speed and then try to be out of back elevator when I touch down on the mains. Make sure you're looking at the right spot out the window so you can coordinate being out of elevator and the wheels touching the...

Tower at KHND nearly did me in yesterday

I would have said, "Um unable. I'm going to need a headwind at my weight." The controller is not going to want to be the one on duty if it doesn't go well. If the controller has been around for any length of time, he/she knows the consequences.

Thoughts on Progressive Lenses For Flying

I use Wayfarer Ray Bans from Lens Crafters with my Rx for near and far and I can see everything fine. Traffic at long distance, to the panel at medium distance, to my iPad mini (Garmin Pilot) close up -- with no problems. Actually, only problem is the cost. They are like, $600. Killer.

Most unwelcoming airport - Chicago O'Hare ORD

I have to say, New York is fantastic! Best class B in the US. If you are in Connecticut or eastern Long Island, the NY class B (with 3 NY airports) sits between you and points south (like New Jersey). It is a long way around. Fortunately, they will let you fly direct to JFK at 5,000+/- and then...

    B17 crash at Dallas.

This is without question the best analysis so far. My takeaway is that show lines are not enough. Inside aircraft must also have a hard deck (minimum altitude) to separate aircraft vertically in the event that they lose situational awareness horizontally relative to their show line. Great point...
