    2017 in Review

Earned my HP and Complex endorsements, flew much further distances (at greater cost) with longer trips to Chicago, Philadelphia, the UP, Norwalk and Bowling Green and more. Lower hours than last year but these trips felt like much greater learning experiences than last year's ~100-hours closer...

PIREP - KTVC Traverse City, MI and my new puppy!

Flew up to KTVC yesterday for a quick trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes... Gotta say, super impressed by AvFlight at KTVC. Awesome line crew, very nice people all around, free ice cream, and located very conveniently to the action in Traverse City. Flight up from KVLL was fun... All of the...

    Pinpointing wind direction......without ATIS

P.S. You should always be aware of wind direction in case you have an engine out and need to pick a field ASAP. Watch the wind (flags) on your way to the airport, check the winds aloft, check sites like windyty.com, check the AWOS/ATIS before you go, and more.

    Pinpointing wind direction......without ATIS

Smoke stacks, clouds, and water are the easiest (and largest) way to figure out the wind direction on the fly. I'm always watching out for which way the wind blows over the water (the glassy side tells all) after spending a little time in a seaplane. Smoke stacks, if you've got them around, are...

Altimeter Read Backs, Yea or Nay?

I read it back to kinda-sorta acknowledge that I can hear them too... Without the read back I feel unresolved. "XYZ Center, N12345, level 7,500" "N12345, XYZ Center, Altimeter 29.99" "29.99 N12345"

Non standard phraseology: Does that bug controllers?

I use "with you" to connect my tail number and the altitude because my number ends in numbers and it's confusing not to have something in between. "November six six one one thousand five hundred..." "November six six one with you one thousand five hundred..." I guess I should use "level"...

    One hand on the yoke?

When I was still a low time student, I remember two handing an approach with the plane blowing around like crazy down final. Up, down, left, right... all I had to keep it going. My instructor said, "take both hands off the yoke right now." I did and the plane dropped to 65kts and flew...

    Cedar Key, FL (KCDK)

First of all, it's an island that's basically just a small (2,355x100) runway, which is awesome. I've been doing a lot of flying lately around Florida in the trusty 150 and I'd always wanted to hit Cedar Key and today I finally got the chance. Leaving Lakeland (KLAL) the clouds were...

    VFR Over Canada?

To overfly Canada VFR without stopping you need to file a VFR flight plan and be on flight following. That's all and it's very easy... U.S. ATC will hand you off to Canada and they will hand you back off to the U.S. controllers when the time comes. Super simple. I would recommend you bring...
