    Wing design question

Check out the video below @3:45...there are several minutes of footage of an advanced flight control system taking advantage of both fat (high) and thin (low) camber wings. Notice how the leading edge flaps "dig" almost 40 degrees down at slower speeds (or when more lift is desired/required)...

KTRI is a good stop. Close to Bristol and Johnson City.

    Practice Test Question

No. You'd dial the front course (270) into the HSI, the needle would still deflect south, and you'd still turn right to get on course.

    Airline takeoff briefings

Even in our community we have one...although I'm usually just saying it to myself. Above 100kts I'll abort for any of the five red warning lights, dual circuit hyd failures, DEL/MECH/INVALID on the FCS page, or catastrophic damage to the airplane. Idle, boards, brakes, stick aft below...

    ILS Question (KCMH)

Without knowing anything specific, I would guess they have two xmitters on the same freq...but only broadcast in the direction of the active runway. You're not gonna have both approaches active at the same time.

Is this alleged F/A 18 pilot + CFI a fake?

Most people who attend TOPGUN are in their late 20's, maybe early 30's depending on timing. However, most people who go to TOPGUN don't get out immediately after...so maybe he went and just looks young.

    Why do pilots say.......(uncontrolled)

Best. Ever. Right now, off the top of my head, I can name 11 female pilots or WSOs in the east coast Hornet community. There's probably at least 5 times that many.

    Why do pilots say.......(uncontrolled)

Haha, that does date you my friend. There haven't been any Romans at Cecil since '95!

    Why do pilots say.......(uncontrolled)

Sometimes (most of the time really) an IFR flight plan for a military plane isn't going to be IFR to XYZ. 90% of our flights are an IFR clearance to some particular fix/warning area/restricted area...almost every military facility will have a book of pre-planned "canned" IFR flight plans from...

My experience with a regional airline pilot

Hey, we use books in the Navy. Those are the things that keep desks from wobbling and help short guys reach the pedals. What I find ironic are the regional pilots who attempt military flight training. Of the handful or so that I know it was a 50/50 split between guys who rock and guys who...

while we are on the subject of logging time (actual)

Interesting...I didn't know that. One of the drawbacks to growing up flying in the military I guess. If we had to have to guys in the jet to log simulated instrument time, or wait for actual instrument time, we'd never make our mins. I do understand why we do things we way we do now, and how...

while we are on the subject of logging time (actual)

So...me (single seat jet) can't log simulated instrument time during day, VFR operations when shooting practice approaches? Me thinks I can. And if I was for some magical reason on a VFR flight plan, I would only log the times I was shooting approaches as instrument. Just like during day...

while we are on the subject of logging time (actual)

Why not? I don't understand the confusion. If you're looking at your instruments, log instrument time. You can log simulated instrument time day, CAVU, VFR. What's going on outside doesn't matter.

while we are on the subject of logging time (actual)

I don't know, it would take some lawyering and fancy wording to prove me wrong. At the boat, all night time is actual. Around here, on an IFR flight plan, night time is at least simulated time if nothing else. It doesn't bother me to log it that way. At night the only way to tell how high...

while we are on the subject of logging time (actual)

I'm probably wrong...but I log all night time as instrument time.

Written Test - How did you know?

Sheppard has an app for iPhone/iPad...nothing for Android that I've found yet, although you could just download it to the phone's browser. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flight-test-5/id595077417?mt=8 Hypothetically, of course.

    Best route across Texas/Ark/Miss

Little Rock (KLIT)has a pretty view with the city in the background along the river. Crew car if you buy gas, lots of good place to eat. Not much in MS, but there is a nice FBO in Meridian (KMEI) with free hot dogs and waffles, free ice cream/coffee/soda/tea, free pizza on Fridays. From there...
