    Statin?

Do some research. The sad truth about statins and how they have been pushed upon us is borderline criminal. You need a new doctor. I took the same statin for nearly 2 years, and while it lowered my cholestetol it also caused loss of cognitive function, muscle wasting, and all sorts of other...

Buying a Plane to train in and keep

I started on 172s, then changed to PA28 (Warrior) about five lessons in. Never went back. Looking down is overrated. Seeing where you're going turning base to final is far more important than what is directly below me. I bought an Archer about halfway through my PPL. Did my IFR and racked up...

    New Gout Diagnosis

I was on allopurinol for gout when I got my medical, and it wasn't an issue. (Plenty of other crap was, but not the gout.) My uric acid levels were fine. I was 80lbs heavier then. Change in diet, exercise, and lots of H2O seemed to do the trick. No more allopurinol.

    KMRY Approaches (?)

Used to live in Monterey. Also after getting my IR it was one of my regular destinations. I've landed both directions. Usually, if the fog is low enough to require the ILS minimums to get down, there is almost no wind to speak of. (If there was, the fog would've gotten blown off.) The ILS from...

Fear of stepping on & off ladders

I don't do roofs, especially now that we live in Texas. Steep roofs here. I've got a 16ft peak height cathedral ceiling that I'm going to have to skim coat (after removing popcorn) and texture. I'm considering droping $300 on one of those A-frames that has a platform with a handrail surround...

    Breathe Right Strips

I use them religiously. Didn't like the extra strength ones. They opened my nostrils so wide my throat would get dry. The don't prevent snoring, but I do find that they make breathing easier for me. (My nose always seems to be mildly congested as well. I also have a deviated septum.) I sleep...

How long after you received your PPL did you take passengers?

30 minutes. Just long enough to fly back to my home field and pickup my wife for a sunset spin around town.

    Alcohol

Zero. Drank more than my fair share in my teens and 20s. Once I got into EMS, it just wasn't worth the risk.

    HIV & The FAA

If you're in the SF bay area, I'd call Dr Robert Keller in Monterey and use him as your AME. Great guy. Great Doc. Great AME. Hell, I'm flying back from Texas to see him for my 3rd class renewal in Sept.

Nearly half of Americans don't want a self-driving car

There will be self-driving cars. It's inevitable, especially since we humans can't seem to be trusted to be responsible. (And the current generation doesn't seem to think they should be held accountable for their actions.) It won't be the government that forces us to let the automation do the...

Eyesight requirements for getting your PPL? One bad eye, one great eye..

I have the same problem. One eye that passes with glasses, the other one doesn't. I had to do a flight with an inspector. We went up, I spotted a few planes in the pattern (before he did) then we went to a nearby practice field and he had me do a few simulated engine out landings from 3000 agl...

What happens if I'm late renewing my medical?

Class 3, that I had to jump through a ton of hoops to get the first one. (Had a single kidney stone 2 yrs prior to getting my medical, plus my left eye was below limits. Also had high blood pressure and was pre-diabetic.) Got the medical with an SI for the kidney stone, and a SODA for the left...

'Report 4 mile base for runway two five left' - meaning?

This is a classic case of reading too much into an instruction. The tower is giving you two separate instructions. One is to report when you are four miles out. (Although there is room for debate, I would just wait until my GPS reads 4 miles.) Second, expect to enter the pattern on the base leg...

Class III or BasicMed: Which would you choose?

I jumped through too many hoops to get my Class 3. I'm not giving it up anytime soon, especially since I'm hoping to fly a pressurized twin in the not-too-distant future. Besides, it keeps me on my toes and always working toward improving my overall health. However, if (in the not-too-distant...

What the hell is IFR anyway?

Happened to me twice, prior to getting my IR. The first time, I was flying my daughter up the coast of CA to Arcata. There was an broken fog bank hugging the coast for the last third of the trip. It was forecast to be ceilings of 1500 with the top of the bank at 3500. The destination was...

    Sold my plane...Now what?

I originally purchased a 98 Archer III during PPL for the purpose of training and building experience. Got my PPL, IR, and a lot of experience. (About 600 hrs, with about 200 XC) Recently, I sold my plane to close on our dream house. (Found what we wanted before we had the money for closing.)...

    Barbecue, no sauce

I have yet to find a BBQ place that I like better than what comes out of my own smoker. But I'm really picky. I want the meat and the flavor from the cooking process to be center stage, not a bunch of spices and sauce. My rubs are just a dusting, and I apply them while the smoker is warming up...

    Kids react to Queen

Have every album, and still listen to them regularly. Between Queen, Rush, Van Halen, and Chicken Foot, I have all the music I'll ever need.
