Approach Controller Overly Concerned with Speed

No best is not fastest... Fastest could exceed VNE if you're also dropping in altitude. For me it depends on conditions. If it is a hot bumpy summer afternoon and I've got kids in the back then best is less than 150 knots. If the air is smooth, late then best is higher. Your first...

    Being sandbagged

A couple of weeks ago I filed for (and got) a direct routing to an airport on the other side of a Class B. This particular leg is something I do often so I was surprised I got it. I filed at the last second and didn't have time to get a typical routing. Even if I file a proper typical routing...

    Piston twin safety

So excluding those who just got the AMEL and then never use it, for the twin pilots who use it is there any supporting data that shows that they are not practicing engine outs? Sometimes I wonder if this argument (which is used often) is a reaction to twin accidents and trying to rationalize why...

    Piston twin safety

Yes, have to agree with you Docmirror. A couple of comments have been made that this article is somehow flawed but without any references or arguments with facts. That is fairly typical for an internet forum though. "In general, a twin flies better on one engine than a single on no...

    Flaps during Engine Out Landing

What about the scenario where you're having a really bad day and you've picked up a ton of ice during the descent and, dang it, your engine just died too. Flaps in or out?

    Beyond the syllabus...

I figured out this one in a hurry when first flying kids  I learned why you want to do this the hard way I didn't preflight mine and got into a high workload situation in IMC, turned on the AP to help relieve some pressure and it turned on with no complaints and then didn't do what it was...

    Fly-in restaurants

New Orleans Lakefront KNEW is a fun airport. Great approach in over the lake, and you can eat in the Art Deco terminal dating from the 1930s. Stunning building.

..... "Spamcan 12345 Cleared for the visual for Runway XX keep your speed up 130 or greater you're following a 757 3 miles ahead, additional traffic 767 5 miles behind you caution wake turbulence" "Approach spamcan 12345 unable 130 this is as fast I can go" "Spamcan 12345 cancel landing...

How to Land at Class Bravo?

Have you noticed that 100LL is reasonably priced there compared to some of the surrounding airports? Maybe they want you to land there? I've never had the pleasure myself. It is too far away from both Dallas and Fort Worth so why?

The reason I fly a twin...

So what's the alternative? Close your eyes and go to your special internal place? Pull the chute? I don't have one of those... I don't know about you but if I have a real emergency I'm going to go out trying and if that means trying to get to the airport even though it is at minimums...

Do you agree with "Too much airframe time"?

Didn't some of them specify airframe life limits? I know the PA46 has a 10,000 hour airframe life limit. Note to self: make sure I sell mine well before then!

    Diamond 50 looks interesting

Yes... I have been following it for years too and agree the DA50 COULD be a nice plane. They don't seem to know what they want to do and/or have run out of money developing it further. I would not be interested in the turboprop version that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. You can't...

    Naked in Class Bravo

Thank you for the lesson in behavior. I shall endeavor to learn from my mistakes and post appropriately going forward. Thank you for your service to the online community. ;) (What were you drinking or smoking last night anyway? I did ask that question but it got lost in the, um, noise shall we...

Bravo clearance without the "magic words"

This does bring up a good point though. If you're below the Bravo and you have not been given a Bravo clearance remember you are STILL VFR and you need to keep your eyes outside the plane. So just because she gave you a heading this doesn't mean that you now don't have to look out for obstacles...
