    How to "scratch that itch"

+1 sport pilot is really good. Yes they are real airplanes. And then when gas goes to $10/gallon you’ll still be flying.

    How to "scratch that itch"

I know this doesn’t answer your question but it reminds me. I was lucky to have the savings and got my PPL while I was laid off from work. I’m not sure I’d have had the time to train while I was working full time.

Power-on stalls - confidence zero, can't feel them or hear horn

Many cockpits are unbelievably un-user friendly, and this is reinforced by the “you’re not a real pilot unless …” crowd. Though I’ve done full power stalls later, my checkride was in a 162, which has a loud and useful horn. And we didn’t use full power on since in that airplane you’d exceed...

    BUMMMFITCHH, pre-landing checklist questions

Hehheh. Reminds me during my PPL oral I mentioned PAVE or IMSAFE can’t remember which now, and the DPE, who somehow had not heard of that one exploded saying “I think if I hear another acronym I’ll f’ing shoot someone!” A memorable moment for someone taking their first checkride.

Does the >150NM Solo Cross Country require 3 landings at controlled airfields? Is my CFI wrong??

Every takeoff I’ve ever done - so I guess I did latch on to it in a way ;) My CFI had a GoPro like camera in the cockpit for my solo work, except for operations at a towered airport, since those would be recorded anyway.

    Airspeed, or Altitude After Takeoff?

Your climb rate comment had me recall getting stuck in ground effect in a tired 150M because I rotated a bit too early. Vx vs Vy is all good ... but that day as I approached the end of the runway I learned that sometimes it has to be Vy lol.

    Airspeed, or Altitude After Takeoff?

I wasn’t thinking drag. Flying slower allows us to turn tighter. I’m not referring to bank angle - I’m referring to the radius of the turn - how many degrees of heading the plane can turn in a given space. The flaps comment was around lowering stall speed and permitting slower flight. Many...

    Airspeed, or Altitude After Takeoff?

Yes, and the math will always show a greater chance of hitting the trees at Vy than at Vx. If you don’t hit the trees, you have a higher chance of returning to a safe landing spot. Maybe that’s what was meant. A turn back to the runway is fascinating in itself. Do you pitch for best glide? Do...

    Airspeed, or Altitude After Takeoff?

So on the airplanes I’ve flown, there’s no pitch up moment upon power reduction. Usually it’s the opposite. So is it mostly psychological factors that lead to stall if there’s an engine failure shortly after takeoff? If Vy is 74, I usually have it trimmed for that speed, or a few knots over, and...

the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

Thanks. Though I'm not instrument rated, I looked at the Low En-Route charts yesterday and I think flying V2-298 at 9.5k eastbound and 8.5k westbound is probably the way to do it, and should be safe as long as I'm flying only over a thin haze and not actual clouds. Winds were stronger at those...

Big Rant. 100 Hours in and no solo. Need any advice.

My 2c - the biggest factors are the training environment and the CFI. Training on a short runway at a popular airport in a large metropolitan area is tough. You spend 50% of your time waiting for takeoff clearance, you're stressed about traffic, stressed about braking, grumpy ATC, big boy...

the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

Yesterday I decided to try a flight from the Seattle area to Ellensburg, which involves crossing the Snoqualmie Pass. I'd read everything I've found about it, the weather was clear skies, no forecast turbulence, westerly winds of 30kts at 10,000 and 10kts at 6000. I was in a C162 Skycatcher -...

    High Wing or Low Wing

Cessnas (162/172/150) were all I flew until I had about 100 hours, then I got checked out in a Archer II. Here are my impressions from that checkout: 1. Pattern work is a delight in the low wing due to better visibility in turns. But also because the Archer responds to flaps (especially...

Looking for a fixed gear plane in good condition... not having much luck

Sounds pretty legal to me. In fact I've advertised this locally but no one has bitten yet. Basically I want to buy a plane, or preferably a share in a plane, with the option to sell it back later, at a predefined price lower than the initial price. I may have to move soon so I don't want to get...

Brian, what does "took out a 5 year note" mean? TIA.

    Aviation family?

The first. In fact, I'm the first in my family to ever set foot in a piston-engined airplane (the plane I got my PP in).

    Ultralight Part 103

Greetings everyone - my first post on the board. Can anyone here demystify the operating restrictions on ULs? Can they be flown in Class E or not? The "prior permission" stuff seems vague, after all you can't fly a certificated airplane into, for example, a class D airspace without prior...
