    VFR flight plan - why?

Dumb question perhaps, but - who routinely files a VFR flight plan, and if you do, why? I generally don't, but I always use flight following, which is easier and seems to have most of the same benefits. I am dumb? Why or why not? :-)

    To boldly go...

On a whim I looked up N1701D. It's a Mooney M20. I'm disappointed that it's not painted silver-grey with a red stripe. Unlikely they'd be willing to sell the N number (for any reasonable amount), alas... :-)

Bose A20 broken headband hinge options

Anyone had to fix one of these? I found a replacement part here: https://hobbsflyer.com/products/bose-a20-headset-replacement-headband I've never heard of this company (not that I've had occasion to until now) -- anyone know anything about them? Other options? The headset is old enough to be...

    Mounting a winch

I want to mount a winch on my concrete hangar floor so I don't have to struggle to push the plane uphill into the hangar and over the track for the door, which is a serious pain especially when the tanks are mostly full. Do I have to drill holes in the concrete and bolt it in that way? I was...

    What is this part of?

Any ideas on what this might be part of? I found it on the floor of my hangar today... looks like the end of a 1/8" diameter pin from something. It may not be clear from the pictures, but one end is clearly broken off. I didn't find anything on the airplane that looks like it might have come...

    What next... glider, tailwheel?

I'm debating adding something new, for fun and variety and better skills, and I'm mostly debating between getting a glider rating and getting a tailwheel endorsement. I have zero time in either, and places probably about equally (in)convenient to do either. Sooner or later I may well do them...

    A20 headset, tighten mic boom?

Does anyone know if there is a way to tighten the mic boom on the Bose A20? Mine has gotten loose enough that it tends to fall out of position on its own -- annoying. Thanks!

    Practical penalties for violations?

Discussions in other threads lead me to wonder... what are the real, extended penalties for blowing off the rules in various ways? Say I lose my medical and can't fly legally, for example. But I have a plane and I know how to be professional with ATC and otherwise not draw attention, so I keep...

Battery Minder - worth it or no?

I need a new battery, and along with it I'm looking at maybe getting a BatteryMinder trickle charger/conditioner, and debating whether it's worth it. It looks like it'll run $325--$350 or so, plus a little time to install. I haven't been flying as much recently as I want to, and while I plan to...

    NASA facility?

Curious... this from Airnav: Airport Operational Statistics Aircraft operations: avg 66/week * 46% local general aviation 44% transient general aviation 6% military 4% air taxi * for 12-month period ending 31 May 2005 This is for the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida, and the...

How much oil burn is too much?

I realize that oil consumption may vary quite a bit, but I want to get an idea of what the acceptable range is and when (absent any other signs of a problem) I should start to care? Lycoming O-540-B4-B5, currently I usually add a quart maybe every 4 or 5 hours of flight time, give or take...

    ELT: 406 MHz worth it?

My plane is currently in for annual, and I'm leaning toward replacing my 121.5 ELT with a 406 MHz model. As far as I can tell there isn't actually a mandate requiring replacement, they just aren't going to be certifying any new 121.5 installations -- but, it looks like the 406 MHz models are a...

    San Diego tips?

Tips and advice for trips to San Diego, for the unfamiliar? I'm probably looking at KMYF or KSEE, unless people advise otherwise. MYF is closer to where I'd be going by about 30 minutes' drive, but VFR only, so if coastal fog or cloud cover favors SEE significantly, that's good to know. If...

    High altitude advice?

Soliciting opinions, advice, and general input on the idea of taking a Cherokee-235 based in Tucson into C08. My model of Cherokee lists a service ceiling of around 12,500 (and my experience says this is not far off), and the field elevation at C08 is about 8,300. I have done a basic mountain...

What percentage of air traffic is VFR?

As the title says - does anyone have any rough numbers for how much of the traffic is VFR vs IFR, typically? Thanks!

    Rules question - certificate superseded?

Rules question... let's say, purely hypothetically, that my class 3 medical expires this month; I make an appointment and do the exam and get it updated, no problem, now I have a new medical cert. Cool. Suppose, some few days later but before the end of the month, I go out flying. When I get...

    Fly-in advice

I'm considering doing the SAF fly-in next week; I've never been to one of these before---any advice from the experienced? I've looked at the special approach and departure procedure notes and whatnot. I'm thinking it would be wise to get some tent-stake style tie-down stakes in case I'm parked...

    Rigging questions

First, how much does it typically cost to re-rig a Cherokee, roughly? Second, how do you know (in varying degrees) when you need it? I'm pretty sure I do... I don't get quite as much speed as others with the same plane report, though only by a few knots, but still. Bigger clue---in smooth air...

    Class 3 vs basic

Well, bummer, my regular physician just let me know that after consulting with her practice group's lawyers, she was advised not to do the basic med paperwork "because of the liability incurred." Poot. So, find another regular doc who will do basic med, or just re-up my current class 3? I'll...

Value of the instrument rating, revisited...

I'm sure I'm opening a can of worms here, but hey, it's PoA, it's what we do right? I'm one of those "been meaning to" work on an instrument rating for quite awhile but never quite got momentum going to do it, and I go back and forth on the "is it really worth it?" question from time to time...
