High Wing vs. Low Wing, end of discussion...

I like the view from a high wing. Aviating is as much about alternative views of the world as it is about shrinking distances; at least, that's the case for me. Of course, high wing pilots need a bit more skill at landing, without the cushy ground effect you get with a low wing. Creature...

The Man Who Killed Bin Laden

It's not beyond belief that the thing was "leaked" at the behest, or at least with the blessing, of a Commander-in-Chief who needed a Shiny Object to distract the voting populace before Election Day, when he'd be spanked in the voting booth for his sins.

    Flaps Up on T & G

Yeah, I did that once in a 172, except for the dying part. Made it over the fence, just barely, puckered the traffic driving past the end of the runway, took a while to extract the seat cushion. A graphic lesson in what not to do.

    Hesistant

Getting a PPL is moderately difficult, and takes time, commitment and money. You've been going back and forth for ten years without being able to generate the commitment. That says something. You've flown in small planes before; if you enjoyed the experience, you'd probably be aware of the...

Logged time in un-airworthy plane and taking checkride soon

We all know that you fly the plane, not the paperwork. That said, the people who give you the papers to OK your flying tend to take their paperwork seriously. Interacting with them, it behooves you to do likewise. Beyond all that, I find that an aircraft owner would forget an annual...

Why does everything in the universe spin?

P.G. Wodehouse has classified this phenomenon: "I am told by those who know that there are six varieties of hangover — the Broken Compass, the Sewing Machine, the Comet, the Atomic, the Cement Mixer and the Gremlin Boogie, and his manner suggested that he had got them all." - "The...

Why does everything in the universe spin?

Why? Counterpoise to ultimate entropic stasis. Our reason for existing is to counter entropy by imposing order on chaos; in the service of this goal it has become necessary to apprehend the true nature of as much of the universe as we are able. We exist as part of the organs of perception by...

Why does everything in the universe spin?

    Oh, please. It's Bush's fault.

    Midair at FDK (Frederick, MD)

I've always disliked coming into FDK. Sometimes takes three tries to avoid non-compliant traffic (pre-tower days) and NORDO cowboys. One time I remember some gigantic Army chopper (C47 Chinook IIRC) just sweeping the active while I was turning base. I'f I'd not aborted the landing, his vortices...

Can someone recommend some good aviation novels?

David Freed has written three novels, main character is an impoverished CFI with a spook background. Mostly mystery/adventure stuff, but the flying parts are integral to the story and accurate, well done.
