    The $20/hour Cessna 172 experiment—Update

Darn…you got me. I never realized how little I have seen in my half century on this spinning rock until now. You seem to be full of yourself. Perhaps you shouldn’t assume. It usually doesn’t work out.

Anyone flying to a Thanksgiving destination?

Cool! Looks like it’s gonna be a wet weekend. I was hoping to fish some.

Anyone flying to a Thanksgiving destination?

Brad, do you keep ground transportation there? I know they have gotten persnickety about that.

Anyone flying to a Thanksgiving destination?

We are flying to KMQI for our regular Thanksgiving trip tomorrow (Wednesday) returning Sunday. Where are the pilots of America going to consume Turkey and goodies this year?

    Pik 'n Pig update [pics]

Has anyone been to Stanton’s recently? I heard the field had gotten rough. Haven’t been there in 25 years. ☹️

    The $20/hour Cessna 172 experiment—Update

Can’t argue complexity much when comparing base engine vs base engine. However the installation in the article isn’t simply a base engine. This is a huge part of my problem with it. Regarding magnetos, on a traditional a/c engine if I lose a magneto I still have one. If something happens to a...

Should I buy a plane... or Not?

@bflynn brings up a good point. I think aircraft prices are going to plummet in the next year or two. I am seriously considering selling my 182 now and holding out for a while to buy a BT-13 or an AT-6. I’ve wanted one of those since I was a kid, and they are a helluva lot more fun! (and a lot...

    The $20/hour Cessna 172 experiment—Update

Both. The complexity is relative. It is extremely complicated when compared with a Continental or Lycoming aircraft engine with magnetos. I simply do not see the value in aircraft applications. My issues with my GM have been mostly mechanical in nature, though I’ve had plenty of electronic...

    Average Cost/Time for Tailwheel Endorsement

It cost me $16,000 for the plane and several airport restaurant cheeseburgers for the instructor. Insurance company required 10 hours, but I was a fresh private pilot with around 60 hours TT and the plane was a hand propper.

    The $20/hour Cessna 172 experiment—Update

No, I’m simply a realist and admittedly an owner of a GM LS equipped product with it’s second LS engine. You can talk to it if you like. Hour for hour it’s been the most problematic POS I’ve ever owned. I’ve owned more than a few trucks and I can tell you if you’re turning 3000-4000 RPM for any...

    Why I chose a Cessna 170 over a 180, or Super cub

Nice video. That ain’t your grandpa’s 170. 180HP, c/s prop, VG’s, bush wheels & tires. The 180 in the 170/172 is the perfect combination IMO. A c/s prop makes it that much better.

    GoPro questions

Seriously considering a GoPro 10 to mount on the strut of my 182. My biggest question is can the NflightCam prop filter for the Hero 10 camera be used externally? If not, does someone make a a prop filter that is suitable for external use? Any tips or tricks to this? Total newbie on this.

age at solo vs hours to solo

Who said it did? I do think certain innate abilities give individuals certain advantages that allow them to be more comfortable thus allowing them to learn more quickly. Regarding what was expected to solo - That depends a great deal on the individual instructor, then and now. It’s an...

    Cooking Turkey

I have cooked several on a pig cooker while cooking shoulders. They always turn out really good. Around here BBQ is a noun.

    The $20/hour Cessna 172 experiment—Update

True enough. I still see no values listed. If you reduce the RPM by 50% you’re still at 2700-3000 RPM. These engines in a vehicle cruise at 1500 to 2000 RPM at highway speed. I’m not relying on a conglomeration of GM chinesium relays and circuit boards to keep the fan turning. I’ll leave the...

    The $20/hour Cessna 172 experiment—Update

The thing I did not see in the article is the power settings required to yield the stated 500 HP of this LS engine. The specs I found for a LS-3 is 525 HP at 6200 RPM. Imagine running the engine in your car or truck at 6200 RPM for 3 hours. That’s the problem with these auto engine swaps. A V8...

age at solo vs hours to solo

I don’t totally disagree with this. Something I have noticed among millennials and generation z is generally they aren’t nearly as comfortable with operating machinery as previous generations. I think this also plays into higher pre-solo hours. There aren’t nearly as many people coming off the...

Anybody have an old, busted Lightspeed xlc they want to sell?

Have you contacted Lightspeed? I had a self-induced problem with mine once and they repaired it at no charge. My experience with their customer service was awesome.
