Anybody gonna fly your airplane to see the total eclipse of the Sun?

Since I haven't seen a mention of NC, I will put in a plug. I will be going up to Highlands, NC (western part) via 24A (Jackson County Airport just outside Sylva, NC). The High Hampton Inn in Highlands is having an eclipse lawn party and will arrange pickup from 24A. Just mind the 300 ft...

Help! House got flooded, need plumbing advice

Sorry for your loss, no one needs to experience that! Matthew has it right: 90 degree ball valves on all shut-offs. Something I haven't seen a comment on is the fact that the meter was replaced. Most new meter installations in the US now are required to have a back-flow check valve in the meter...

Anyone been to a military funeral lately?

Just ran across this timely thread. I buried my father last Thursday. Dad was the top turret gunner on his B-17. Dad was buried in the mountains in Western North Carolina. The local VFW (5202) did a perfect job of the honors. Yes, they were in the 70-80 year old range, but the bugler and rifle...

Something about you that not many here may know

Spa is on the schedule for next year, just too expensive as a one-off this year. Will combine a few over there next year. Regarding RHD cars: never driven in anger, but when I came over here my first boss had a Jag 140 or 150 (can't remember), beautiful BRG, aluminium body, with "INDY" on the...

Something about you that not many here may know

I should have guessed from your Username. We lived on Alex Moeller Strasse in the early seventies. It was a short ride over the pedestrian bridge over the Autobahn to the ring. My wife and I used to ride there also on Sunday afternoons. I worked in the cryogenics division of Aurepa in the...

Something about you that not many here may know

I have also driven the "Green Hell", first in a 1951 VW Kaefer (all 25 HP working), passed a Fiat, you really can hear the crowd on the banks cheer. Last time was in a Porsche Cayenne S, much faster and more comfortable, but not as exciting. Also drove Monaco, back when the tunnel was shorter...

What foods do you like that not many others like?

Almost every kitchen in Germany has a Meerrettich (Horseradish) grater. It is sort of a nutmeg grater on steroids. Also good on roast beef. Same family as Wasabi, in fact the Japanese call horseradish "Western Wasabi".

What foods do you like that not many others like?

Licorice, especially the German and Dutch "adult strength" varieties. The Finnish Panda licorice is also good. Haggis, if made with steel-cut oats and a good yellow onion. Many Scots pretend not to like Haggis because it was survival food during the many conflicts with England, but as a...

JFK "Terror" - False Threat Shenanigans

Similar event in Raleigh, NC at N.C.'s largest indoor mall: "shots" heard, panic, 911 lines and almost all cell towers jammed, people rush out of mall or into stores hiding in the back rooms. Police and SWAT teams arrive, lock down the mall, proceed to check everyone before allowing them to...

    Bananas on a boat superstition

In Manteo, NC there is a dolphin watch tour boat captain who uses this every tour. I thought it was just his own invention. If dolphins have not been seen for some time (usually you have to slow down and even stop to avoid any chance of harassing them), the captain goes on a rampage looking...

Great Smokey Mountains National Park - driving, one day?

What a walk down Memory Lane! In the late 70's my wife and I would come over to see my folks every Christmas. A stop at the Biltmore House was in the plan every Christmas Eve. This was before the Winery and Inn were built. Our rental would be one of the three or four cars at the house! We had a...

Great Smokey Mountains National Park - driving, one day?

Matthew, I spent my high school years in Waynesville. My dad still lives there. When I get up there, I stay at the Waynesville Country Club (now gentrified to the Inn, Golf Club and Spa). Still a nice quite stop for a night with good food. If you come through Asheville and visit the Biltmore...

4 hours of Looney Tunes including Bugs

Wow Van Johnston, what a way to kill a thread! Stopped that sucker cold in its tracks! Hasn't moved for days. :D In the early '70s I lived in Hockenheim, Germany. On Tuesdays at 1900 the regional TV network, SWR I believe, would broadcast "The Bugs Bunny Hour". Since this was German TV there...

    Favorite WWII German Aircraft Poll

ME-262 You have to love a jet with a recoil starter like your lawnmower, even if it only started the pony engine.
