Sky Beacon- STC approved, NOW shipping

uAvionics are apparently now saying that they won't ship any SkyBeacons (even wingtip) at least until mid-February.

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

I know (or have heard of) many airline pilots who refuse to fly IMC in any single engine piston. Since this is the main environment I fly in, we are clearly on opposite ends of the spectrum. Are they right? If being 100% safe = "right", then sure, but that's not practical. Still, there are many...

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

Flown properly by a current and proficient pilot, this flight would have been legal, normal and routine. (I have flown many like that, with only 50% of the engines this guy had at the start). We barely know anything about this particular flight. Was the pilot current and proficient for this type...

Garmin Pilot for Android -- Tech Support, Tips, Tricks

Answering my own question, I have pretty much figured out all of the new features by trial-and-error. But still haven't found a pilot guide supplement documenting the changes in detail.

Garmin Pilot for Android -- Tech Support, Tips, Tricks

Garmin Pilot Android version 6.2.0 is out, sporting lots of cool sounding features. Problem is, I can't tell what they are exactly and how to use them. E.g.: "Logbook traces", "Show plates on main map", "Database download automatic in background", "Icing potential layer on map", "Glide range...

    I'm officially an instrument student!

Yes, I get that. But that's similar to hood-takeoff, which is not quite the same thing as zero-zero takeoff.

    I'm officially an instrument student!

If it's a windshield issue, then it might as well have been CAVU with a hood on. I thought we were discussing actual low vis conditions, not window problems.

    I'm officially an instrument student!

If you are joking, or exaggerating, then nothing more is needed. But if you are serious, then if you saw anything at all out the window, to allow you to line up, it means you could see runway markings or lights, all of which would have to be well past "an inch", hence vis was not true zero-zero.

    I'm officially an instrument student!

OK, don't want to labor the point, but if it's truly less than an inch, no hyperbole, as you say, what can you see outside the window? Even the ground straight down is more than an inch, outside of Lilliput.

    I'm officially an instrument student!

That's the part I don't get. How do you line up (and it obviously has to be more accurate than normal) with "truly not 1 inch of vis"? And if it's hyperbole, then what was the real vis?

    Android tablet for Garmin Pilot

I have GP running on two Nexus 7's (2013), one of which is 16GB (the other 32GB). As long as I don't install too many extra Apps, there is plenty of space for (roughly) a third of the country, with some spare (typically over 1GB). If you want to keep the entire country there, then you'd need...

    I'm officially an instrument student!

I did it as a student, though I can't swear it was true 0/0, but the runway center lights were not visible once we lined up. Not sure how one would line up accurately in absolute ZERO vis. But the point is, if you do align with the runway somehow, and then hope your DG doesn't precess much...

DME, dump it or keep it

Absolutely. I actually carry two. And have a belly antenna to go with it.

DME, dump it or keep it

Except in my case the entire (750) box gave up the ghost, both nav and comm. And I didn't remember the last frequency, but ATC found me on guard. :)

DME, dump it or keep it

Dump it for sure. I did that a few years ago when upgrading, and have never regretted or needed it. GPS/WAAS rocks, and nothing else is needed. If GPS goes down (as it has for me, in IMC), you'll have plenty of other options.

    GTN 750 froze up!

As I reported at the time, my 750 completely died on me in IMC last year. With no warning the screen suddenly went dark and all functions instantly stopped, both nav and comm. Recycling power made no change. Fortunately my destination was VFR so it was a non-event otherwise. Turned out it was a...

    young eagle flight incident

Unfortunately that rule doesn't work very well when transitioning to gliders. A better rule is to always fly a stabilized approach.

    Altimeter failed IFR check

Another vote for AQI. Have had very good experience with them. Good price, excellent quality.

How often do you get a hold while IFR?

In recent years in my experience, ATC seem to prefer delaying vectors to holds, at least with slowpoke GA.

    clearance limit

My understanding of the expectations of some controllers (see my post above) is that in this case you'd fly to the airport at 2,500' and hold over it. Of course they'd very likely get to you long before that, hopefully in time to shoot the approach, but that's what they are thinking in case you...
